Yes, YOUR evil boy. Remember me talking about one of my gold laced boys nearly getting scalped a while back in the rooster pen? I had kept him alone a couple days to recover and then tossed him out in the main yard.......he keeps to himself, poor guy. Some of the younger birds hang out at the back of the yard and he likes to go visit with them sometimes and they don't seem to mind him.

Well every now and then I see Mr Buff columbian/mille wandering down the back of the yard. All by himself. How strange, I thought.........

Er, not strange AT ALL. Turns out he is down there looking for that poor rooster to HARASS. Whenever he finally sees him, he goes tearing off after him. Poor little gold laced guy........banished to the hawk part of the yard.

I'm going to stick Mr Evil into an individual rooster pen if he doesn't watch it. He has more attitude than he knows what to do with. Little man syndrome.

Oh gee! Sounds just like CB! What is it with smaller roo's that they feel they have to constantly prove themselves?

If I could only get that little toe rag to understand that it just isn't necessary, he'd find himself alone a lot less often.

I love him dearly, but he can be a PITA!

Try a bucket of water on his head the next time you catch him being a little pill to Golden Lace boy. If the weather is warm enough that is. That should cool his jets a bit!

Now why you trying to give me an evil boy? I want a sweet boy dang it...LOL You know if he starts that mess here and I am sticking him out with Lancelot....Lancelot will fix that little man syndrome real quick. Or I could confine him with Sumo Kung Fu chicken too....muahahaha she will learn him real quick....

Janelle that would be the black orp a few pages back that Cheyenne was holding.

Not only NO but HECK NO!!! There is no way I am EVER setting eggs to hatch any sooner than April 1 or so! The last time I had chicks hatch out in March, they were stuck inside the house for over 8 weeks, waiting for the weather to warm up. Nope! Never making THAT mistake again!

I think I'll just leave any egg hatching up to little mother Maggie, TYVM!

Or maybe one of my other girls will take up the challenge next spring. Vivian seems to be particularly prone to sit on eggs for several hours each day. Might be a mama in the making there!

Well kids, we've already hit the zero mark on the old thermometer tonight. The boys spent the entire day inside of their coop, with the door shut, and I didn't hear one complaint out of any of them. Checked on them several times throughout the day and they were perfectly happy to stay put. I think they understand intuitively that outside is NOT the place to be right now. Don't know how long that attitude will hold up, but hopefully long enough for me to either get some petroleum jelly or the temperatures to start rising.

Chief and the girls barely came out to the covered run all day today. I guess with two heat lamps going out there, and a fully insulated coop, they have no desire to move their butts outside at all. And why should they? They have all the feed, water, and oyster shell inside the coop that they could possibly ever want or need!

I don't know what it is, but there's just something about going that extra mile for my chickens in the winter. It gives me a nice warm fuzzy feeling, knowing that I've made them as comfortable as humanly possible. I so wish we had a heated garage or shop though. They'd all be in there right now, with a nice fire going in a wood-stove, and plenty of roosting ladders for them to enjoy! *sigh* Someday....someday....

Yes Yes but do they have a radio....xmas tree, stockings, lights and foot warmers? If not you are slacking...get no it....

You stay safe and warm....do you have any bag balm...if so, you can put that on their combs or A & D ointment too.

Wonder where I could find some Del eggs to throw in there

I will look around and see if I can find some for ya. The past week my girls have slowed WAY down! Molting feathers everywhere...... looks like a snow storm hit their pen. May be able to come with a few anyway.

Well theres still time and if not its ok

Well, I did bring the boys in to the pump house around 9:30 or so. We're down to minus 8 now, and I just couldn't stand the thought of them dealing with that. Especially as we're supposed to get down to minus 13 or lower tonight.

Nope, not a drop of any of those things Cetawin. It's been many, many years since we've had a baby in the house and so we just don't keep that kind of stuff around. Darn my failing memory! I told myself at least a dozen times this autumn that the next time I went shopping, I needed to pick up a small jar of Vaseline at the very least. Kept on forgetting it each and every time. But I'd sure as heck remember it as soon as I got home!

Anyhow, all three boys are snug in the pump house with the heater running full tilt, the radio softly playing in the background and the light way down low. They're about the happiest boys I've ever seen, and I truly believe they feel something akin to gratitude right now. They were huddled so tightly together out in their coop when I went to gather them up and bring them in. Now, each is sprawled out on their own soft fluffy bath towel. Brutus is behind me on the work table, CB is contentedly ensconced on the washing machine and Red is perfectly happy on the dryer. Yup. Very happy, grateful little boys!

We'll just have to wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Well, I am not going to let my chickens read any of this, or they will run away. My chickens will not be getting any supplemental heat this winter. The exception will be the (former) Layer's Coop. The grow out chicks are now housed in there, and they will have a couple heat lights. The others will have heated waterers, but that is it. I just think chickens have been around for many more years than heat and electricity, and little birds out in the trees survive, too ...... so, no heat here.
