forgot to mention.....tried to move another of the ridiculously heavy bags and just couldn't manage it. I tried! But ow. I think I hurt my back. It was ridiculous. I'm not sure how I'm going to get them up the hill. If it rains tomorrow I probably won't get them up there. If it doesn't rain, I may pull the mower out, hook up the trailer and then drive it around and up the street to get to the driveway LOL.

I took a good look at my chicks today. The youngest batch looks very "female heavy". Of 6 chicks, 4 are VERY girly, 1 is pretty girly and 1 is a definite boy.

Of the youngest batch of 13, 7 are boys, 5 are girls, 1 is maybe but kind of girly looking.
Of the oldest batch of 6, 3 are boys, 3 are girls.
The oldest singleton is a boy.

So, 14 girls and 12 boys! That reversed my original thinking of 12 girls and 14 boys. It could still change on the iffy ones I guess.

However that messes up my plans! I want to stay under 50 and that would put me at 51. Darn it. Guess I'll be selling some more!

Oh sweetie! I'm so sorry to hear this. I'm lighting my special candle right now, and saying prayers for you and your flock. I'll be keeping everything crossed for this being something treatable, and that you'll not loose your entire flock. Even the loss of just one is so devastating. We're here dear lady. We care. Please, please! Keep us posted!

That is indeed strange that it's hit a few flocks in the area. I wonder if the wild birds picked something up and are spreading it.....or if its a feed or shavings issue? The guy that had problems around here was less than 10 miles from where I am....and both he and a buddy at another farm were having the same problem. Their hay tested okay and the illness stopped, so who knows what it was.

I haven't had anything out of the ordinary here. Same ol, same ol. I have kept my bantam mottled cochin flock locked up for about a week and a half now.....and they will stay locked up until a week from this coming weekend. They need a covered pen before they can be let out of that coop, or they will get killed by the hawks. At least they should know where to go roost once i let them out! Glass half full.......

Morning all...gotta share the latest picture of my "not to be in the house" rescue kitty (Ms Lily)

Today is Day 20 (day 21 starts around noon) for my Col Rocks from the Canadian trio.....1 pipped so far.

Y'all have a great day.

BTW - almost all the snow is gone

Aw, I like when the kitties play paperweight.

My new kitty Lucy is doing good. She is finally starting to come out of her shell and make her own decisions. For the first few weeks all she did was stay in the extra bedroom and sleep or look out the window. I could bring her out to the living room and set her on the couch and she would stay where I set her until I moved her. After allllll those snow days last week where I spent my day at home sitting on the couch working, she is finally starting to WANT to come out of the extra bedroom on her own, and will actually come all the way over to the couch. She has only jumped up on it once on her own. Usually she will lay just in front of it, unless I pick her up and put her on it. She is such a happy little kitty though. Norman is enjoying chasing her around.

Janelle, please be careful! This sloping land is why my ankle will never be the same again. I like being up on a small mountain, but I'd rather there be more flat area around the house and coops than I have. Would make things so much easier!

Y'all don't know this, but General Custer's wife Elizabeth was Elizabeth Bacon, a relative of my DH's. Since Beau is named for General Beauregard and JoBeth is very southern-sounding, I think I'll call the other little D'Uccle girl Lizzie for Elizabeth Bacon Custer. So, we have Beau, JoBeth and Lizzie. Ok, now I have to figure out which girl is which. One is definitely smaller than the other, but till the weather clears and the ground dries up, I can't let them outside. Poor Nugget has been inside for two months now, from the time she went broody, except for potty breaks.

Next place I live will have to be flat! The hill is nice as regardless of how much of a torrential downpour we get, I never worry about coops flooding. My neighbors would be underwater to their roofs before my house was near a puddle. Because I live in the original farmhouse that used to "own" all of this surrounding land....I am the top of the hill! Everything is downhill from here. Sigh.

I am as careful as I can be out there, considering. Going out of town this weekend and I plan on asking my neighbor to care for the chickens. Just too dangerous to expect the petsitter to tromp down the hill carrying a 5 gallon bucket full of water, if it is icy, wet or snowy. My neighbor should have no problems at all. I just need to snag him between now and then to see if he can do it.

I like those names as well! I am bad about not naming my chickens. I tried in the beginning, but just reverted to calling them CHICKENS. Other than Mr Mottled the rooster and Stew #1 and #2, the rest are just CHICKENS. I love to yell CHICKENS and see them all come running.
