Just stopping by on my weary way to bed. Been a long day and the night is already too long by half. Not much of any changes in the flock to report. Still some sneezing and coughing like sounds from Chief and the girls. Strangely enough, they always sound their worst at night, but during the day, while they're running all over the place, they sound pretty good. I'm beginning to have my suspicions about the pine shavings I'm using. I may pick up a new bale from another feed store in the near future and see if that helps the situation.

GeeGee got confused again this morning when she returned to her eggs, but it was alright as Ivy was filling in for her. She snuggled down on the eggs in the next nest box, but she knew those weren't HER eggs! And as soon as Ivy finished up her business and hopped out, GeeGee scampered around the corner and took stock of HER nest. One very content little lady when I checked on them this evening to tuck them in and lock them up.

If I can just squeeze in the time to make her a door and take out the one divider, or maybe both, and give her extra room, I know she won't have any more problems with confusion over which is her nest and which is not. Nor will any of the other girls be able to sneak in any more eggs on that poor child! Granted, she's the second largest hen I have, but that doesn't mean she should be expected to do everyone else's work!

Scott, I'm saying some very fervent prayers over here. I so hope that this is it! That this is the job that God wants you to have, and where He wants you to be. You so deserve to have the peace of mind and stability that comes from being gainfully employed. Here's keeping my fingers crossed that it will also include a good medical package as well!

Laura, attitude is everything in a situation like yours. And from what I can see, yours is perfectly suited to what may lay ahead of you!

You are in my prayers as well. I hope they can have everything taken care of quickly and that your recovery is even swifter! Please, keep us posted on how you're doing!

Kathy, how are them peeps coming along? We need an update woman!!

Look at these cool old pictures I found. They are from 1914 "Poultry Success," that is available online. I don't understand this.... how come they used to keep the hen in these little houses, and the chicks could get out but the hen couldn't? I saw other similar set-ups that did the same thing.

These pictures are from E. B. Thompson history, "The Imperial Ringlets Barred Rocks." Named Ringlets because of the crisp barring forming a necklace of sorts around the neck, like ringlets. He won at Madison Square Garden for 24 years in a row! His history amazes me.

By keeping the hen confined, the chicks were basically confined as they won't stray too far. Maybe by keeping her confined, they could feed the chicks other stuff outside? Who knows.

When I went to let the big coop out today, I was happy to see my younger birds blending in well in there. The younger mottled/whatever cochin rooster came running right out bip bopping around and some of the other younger ones seem to be starting to mesh well as they were mixed in with the big birds a bit. I've noticed a few starting to go up on the roosts at night as well. Excellent!

I expect to be able to move the next batch outside the weekend of the 29th, which is also when I plan to do a deep clean of the big coop. This weekend is shot with me going out of town, but by then the young ones in the brooders should be big enough to last outside, and I should be just about ready to make a new rooster pen for all the boys. I want to have all the boys gone by end of February. That should get me into Spring with a fresh slate. All brooders will be empty (!!!) and I will be ready to start (or finish) building plans for the spring breeding pens. I still need to build 2 more coops and put up two more fences, rebuild the hoop top and also put some sort of cover on the big pens.

I want to hit April completely done with my Chicken Projects and ready to enjoy Spring.

Well you know how I feel about your job situation and pray for the biggest and best job for you and yours. In the name of Jesus amen.

Now I do hope the CR 's turn out well cuz after next month I'd like some eggs. Going to see my Son and his and the grand children. It will only be the second time I've seen my grand son. Sent him a john deer rocking horse for his B-day. They're in Alabama. Oh and gotta share cuz this is cool. May get to go to Honduras with a group in the future. Doc bailey just came back but says he may put together a group. Says i can go. $1200. Hope it works out.

Scott and all take care things to do.

Rancher

Thanks Tim

ALL prayers are appreciated. As for CR eggs, you just say when. Sorry i couldn't get you the BR eggs we talked about, but I think you will like these birds too. VERY rare and I think, very pretty.

Where is your family in Alabama??

Is the Honduras trip a mission trip? Our church has 3 planned this year:

Andros Island (small island in the Bahamas devastated by Hurricane Andrew yrs ago and pretty much forgotten), you might be able to see a bit about it on our website www.discoverthewell.org
Liberia (a gentleman in our church has a foundation that has built an orphanage and a school there)
West Virginia (a local mission so that our under 18 aged kids can get involved)

Anyway, thank you ALL for the prayers and support. I know God has something in mind for me, I just need to trust His timing

Everyone have a great night!!

I'm not really sure, Dr. Bailey did mention building and I do know they are working on clinics. He did mention some carpenters going. I haven't really discussed the details. He just came back this week with a group of young folks.

My family is stationed near Montgomery, DS is in the airforce. They just bought a new house.

Scott, prayers for sure! I hope this is the job God has in mind for you! And I hope you can sell some of those babies - you will post pics, won't you?

Kathy, those birds are fantastic, and those photos are wonderful. Amy is right, you do find the best stuff!

Nella, you finish up,and you will immediately move into another project, I bet you will!

Mucking runs as the snow is melting is back breaking work. I had thrown hay down on the snow so my big sillies would get out of the coops, and now I have a sodden, nasty mess. Yuck. Well, back to the grind! Hope everyone is well, and those of you in my area are enjoying the break in the weather and the sunshine!

Kathy, how cool! Thanks so much for posting- you DO find wonderful information and are wonderful in general.

Just wanted to let you know that she's great.

Beth you know what wet straw is like so why did you do that? Easier to throw them out and let em get used to it than to hurt yourself mucking that mess out.

Nella when are you heading this way? We are under a call for 4 - 8 inches of snow tomorrow .

We don't have any actual snow in the forecast that I saw, but the cold is biting! It's so wet and that makes it so much worse!

Brandon, I got quite a surprise in the mail today. Thank you! That was so out of left field, I was blown away. Made my day!

ETA: I think my Buff Brahma is having an egg issue for the first time in her four years. She was on a nest a week ago but no egg. Today, she was on one nest for an hour, then moved to another for an extra hour or so. No egg from Caroline. Can't feel any egg in the oviduct so I fear she is building gunk in her oviducts. Crap, I didn't want to lose her to reproductive issues like the others.
