Kathy,
there is a great quote in one of the old poultry books I bought at Nationals that is so old it described BR as a new breed and wondered whether they would amount to anything. I will have to look it up for you, I just about died laughing when I read it. It was a Brit publication, so they were having their doubts about them amounting to anything.

I love those old books! That is so funny. I wonder what will be said of Delawares in another 50 years.

An old ad for Rosecomb Barred Rocks ....

Most folks wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a rose combed BR and a Dominique, though in an ideal world, their body types are fairly different. If I really wanted rose combs, I'd just get Doms, personally. Half the time, folks think any white bird with black in its hackles is a Delaware or Brahma anyway--they really don't pay attention to detail enough not to breed rose combed barred birds of different breeds together.

That is so true Cyn...the goblin that lives next door has a decent looking Barred Rock rooster that he insists is a Dominicker. I have explained numerous times Dominique and he does not have one...pointed out that HUGE single comb, the leg color and the barring difference. I gave up, if he wants to be an idiot, so be it.

Well DH spent 4 hours sitting at the exit off 1-75 last night trying to come home, he and about 20 other people could not get home. Finally a plow showed up. We have the sun out and a hopefully a high today of 18 degrees but it feels much colder out there.

Had a friend who thought my Dominiques were BR's Most folks don't know to many breeds except RIR's and BR's and White Lghns. Thank goodness for BYC and Storeys. Just noticed that ad says IOWA and I sent an e-mail to Phil Shanks about Dels. He's in IOWA but havent' heard back from him.

My little old lady neighbor calls all my "striped" chickens domineckers......my big blue barred rock rooster was a "nice old domincker". Of course, she is mostly deaf and probably has bad eyesight too, so I can't complain much. Also, when I had 27 roosters she said she would just take out her hearing aids if they got a little noisy. Good neighbor! ha!

Everyone here in the mountains calls barred birds Dominickers - I think its because it was the old barnyard breed around here. My MIL was raised with them, and she said everyone had them.

Kathy, I love that old advertisement. Did anyone else notice the price of a chick back in 1927? Twenty CENTS!?!?

And that was for the rose comb chicks! The "other breeds available" cost was only 14 cents apiece! Hmmmm....I wonder if that would have been considered expensive back in those days. Back in 1927 the price of a loaf of bread was around five cents or less on average.

Oh well, either way, that's a cool ad Kathy. Thanks for sharing it. Can't wait to see what other little goody you post next!

We've got freezing rain this morning and it's causing havoc all over the roads up here. Thank heavens I don't have to go anywhere today. I sure hope it's cleared up by tomorrow though. I have to walk across the road and go to my neighbors daughters baby shower! Oooooh! That might make for some treacherous walking! I wonder if I'll make it. Between our two driveways, we're talking better than a quarter of a mile from doorstep to doorstep!

Well, time to go let everyone out and do my morning chores. Y'all have a great day!

Well I just sold 3 of my BO girls. They were part of the first bunch I got back last April. I teared up when they left. I'm such a nut case!! They are the first chickens I have ever sold so it was a new experience. I have a couple that want 7 and suppose to meet them in the morning unless because of the weather they cant make it. When those girls go i'll probably be sobbing. I just keep telling myself I need the room for all these other girls.

That's always the problem, realizing you only have so much room, and if you have or want new ones, some of the old have to go. I would probably cry, too, so here's a kleenex!
