Cyn,

for Lexie.
June sure is pretty.

I got the dels moved to the breeder pen last night. I think the welsummer roo, Rupert, is happy to be back with the rest of the girls. He is the top roo and very submissive to me. He keeps the peace in the flock.

Welsummers have never really appealed to me much.

I guess I just don't know much about them. I am glad that Rupert is happy!

Okay, I was gonna start a thread for this, but decided to post it here instead. I copied this from my "almost post".

Well, reading the definition of heritage poultry, several posts and more research about hatchery vs. breeder quality, I tend to see people use hatchery quality in kind of a negative tone, IMO. So here's my dilemma about hatchery stock.

I understand that heritage breeds and nice quality birds are endangered, and would love to be a part of saving them, etc. BUT... what IS so wrong with hatchery? Yes, hatcheries are large businesses that are against what some people want, particularly breeders, but chickens are chickens either way and we still like them, right?

Sure, it'd be a lot better if all quality was good quality, but it's not. So what really is wrong with some hatchery stock? More people should have nice quality, I am all for that. But there are the city folks and new chicken owners, or people who have egg businesses where hatchery is just the easiest way to go.

Right now, 3/4 of my birds are hatchery and I, personally, though am not following the SOP by any means, think that they do look beautiful and love em' a lot.

Thanks.

There is nothing wrong with having hatchery stock if you just want pretty birds who lay eggs. Most of us start out that way. If you want to breed something to the Standard and see how "perfect" you can make it, or you want to show them, then it's best to start out from parent stock that is at least decent quality according to that standard.

Sadly, for whatever reason, both of Ellie's chicks died in shell. They were active on Day 17 or so. No idea what happened. At least one of them was in position to break into the air cell, but didn't. I did candle the seven eggs that I just put into the hatcher and all were moving around in there, three of Georgie's, two of Ellie's and one of Miranda's (this will be her very first baby if it hatches). June's baby is in the brooder fluffing out. The three who are a week old are very suspicious of the newcomer. They are watching it from the other side of the brooder, LOL.
