I have caught 5 - and one opossum. It is bad. The male the other night was the biggest coon i have EVER seen. He filled that trap and was bulgin out thru the sides - and he was mean

well this guy i would have guessed at about 30-35 pounds - and well he did NOT go down easily. It alarmed me as he was big enough and ornery enough that if he had gotten in my barn he could have easliy taken out anything in there - even ole Big Blue the rooster. scares me .

Coons have been trying to get into the bantam coop, but the hardware cloth screen that is bolted down to close is keeping them out.

My
blue Rock, Neela, is on Day 5 today with six eggs from Suede's pen (all Dusty and Smoky). Guess what? They're ALL veining!

And Smoky has gone broody now.

Knock on wood, I haven't seen a sign of the coons trying to get inside. I, too, have hardware cloth on the bottoms of most of my coops and underground as well. They seem to be seeking the feed trays that I leave outside. That is fine by me. I would rather they look outside instead of inside. I only put feed inside in the winter, or when it rains here, in an attempt to keep mice away.

Years ago, my parents used to feed the dang things! Raccoons that is. We had 28 of those vile creatures on the lawn one night. That's when mom & dad called a halt to feeding them. It was just getting too nuts! I think back to those days and I positively shudder to think what could have happened!

Keep up the good work Kathy and Knox. I hope you get them all! Wretched little beasties!

It is so blasted hot here. I watered down the pens and favorite dust bath holes, as well as lots of shady grassy areas. Even the little chicks seemed to enjoy it.

I may have to rehome Isaac, though I don't want to.

He is going nuts mating the Brahmas, even in this heat. Why he is so focused on those two, I have no idea, except that I put them back in the main flock after being in a separate coop for awhile. He was mating Caroline, who got loose and ran under the coop, way up where she was pretty much wedged, and even then, I saw him pulling her, trying to mate her or drag her out, couldn't tell which and I yelled for DH to help her. Tom used a PVC pipe to poke at him and run him out and Ike was breathing so hard, he was wheezing. We had to put him in the dog kennel above Zane to force him to calm down and rest. I can't deal with this much more. He's going to hurt one of my older girls or he's going to die of a heart attack in this heat. I love him but he isn't slowing down, even at over two-and-a-half years old. He has 19 hens, what more does he want? He needs about 30 young, chunky ladies who can handle his studliness, I guess. Amazing, these Delaware boys, how many hens they can handle at once.

This heat is about to kill me. And I have two broodies to deal with and old ladies on top of that. Plus, no one has claimed Ranger yet, either.
