Well, Don Schrider of the ALBC is wrong. The breeds name is New Hampshire. There is no "Red" in the breed. You can see this in the APA SOP book, as well.

Yard full o' rocks :

Are ya'll trying to specifically feed product that is "meat" free??

I use Tucker Milling (local manufacturer) and meat by products is the second ingredient. Everything I'm reading says chickens need "meat" protein

Am I behind in a discussion here???!!!

BTW - evening y'all....rainy and cool here today (Praise Glory)

I want meat by products in my feed. I also want tagetes or marigold extract. So, I am mixing Purina Game Bird Conditioner (19%) with meat by products and Nutrina Nature Wise feed with marigold extact (18%). I am also now adding scratch and BOSS into the mix. I prefer my Layers have no more than 19% (prefer 16 - 18%) protein. I am finding too much protein causes as many problems as not enough protein. Up to point of lay I like around 19 - 20%. It is hard to find feed around here that has animal by products. I can order ADM feed which has it, and I do that when I remember.

Hey Cyn....hope you guys didn't get flooded. We got about 4" of rain yesterday and a full day of mist/rain today. No temps above 80 here for the next 5 days......woooooo hooooooo. I'm off to Knoxville tomorrow and Nashville Thurs-Fri. Temsp there are LOW 70s!!!!

MAYBE SUMMER IS FINALLY GONE??!!

I got my FIRST egg from the first born CR pullet today. LONG, torpedo shaped, dark brown, just like her mama laid. Probably gonna set up a few breeding pens if this weather stays cooler and raise a few CRs this Fall. Had an APA judge contact me today wanting 2 pair of my CRs....not sure if I want to let any go or not!!

Cyn - I love Tucker feeds. I use the 22% Super Layer and also their 5 way scratch. Birds love it and seem to do well on it.

Hope everyone is well.....

LH - "Where are you"???? Hope you are ok!

Off to pack....everyone have a GREAT (cool) evening

Poor LH has cracked ribs from that dadblasted cow crushing her against Jo's stall gate! I think she needs to present the owner with the doctor bill.

Oh, we never get flooded for more than a few minutes way up here on the mountain! That's the best thing about this place--would take a flood of biblical proportions to even think about touching us up here.

I am glad Jo took a chunk out of that stupid cow. I wish she would have kicked her to pieces for doing that to LH - were they Holsteins by any chance?

Knox I missed the whole birthday thing, I am SO sorry, and happy belated birthday? How old are ya, you young thing you?

Cyn, very glad to hear your tests were OK - do the rains sort of rinse out your pens the way they do mine? Everything runs to the lower end, and I can just run a shovel along the edge!

Brandon, thanks for the info - she is really a pretty pretty thing.

I wish I could find feed with meat by product, too, but see nothing in the area but Purina stuff or Nutrina, which I think is hardly any different.

Hey all...awake from my painkiller wearing off.

Update

Hairline fractures and a chip to three ribs.... the cow(s) are mixes. The offending Cow is a brown and white dairy cross, calves are dairy crosses and some brown swiss. Miss Brown and White beast left in a cattle trailer with about 10 calves and she has a huge bite to her face just below her eye and half of one ear ripped off...Jo tore a new butt! I am telling you Beth...Jo's stall is HERS and nothing goes in it or tries. I was very very lucky....I just put Jo inside for the night and had the gate halfway closed so when the cow plowed into me the gate was able to move a couple of feet so I was not hammered into a stationary object UNTIL the cow pinned me against it and Jo pressed in from the other side going after the cow. I think Jo had taken all of the cows she was going to...they come in and eat her hay and bang around making a mess and then I scream and she gets hit in the butt by me and the gate....she just had enough. I will admit to watching her inches from me with teeth gnashing...I was encouraging her. I kept saying "Get her off me Jo, get her girl". She was going at her over the top of the gate, through the gate by my shoulder and I was pushing at the cow with my feet. I have heard stallions scream but never have I heard a mare scream like Jo was. Horrifying sound from inches away. I called her vet Dr. Mason to find out if she could catch something from the cow like mad cow disease or something from biting the stupid thing. Rabies? Anything. Dr. Mason laughed at me and said "She ripped the cow's ear off?" I said no, just half of it and he howled laughing and asked if I wanted him to come check her out. I said no, all the blood was the cow's. He was rolling.

I did not realize I was hurt until after my bath and I went to lay down in bed and my ribs hurt so bad I could not breathe so off to the ER. Then I get home about 5:45am and cannot take pain medication because of the appt with the endo at 2:30. Oh yeah. Endo said he wants to surgical remove my thyroid in 2 months and I told him No, once he gets it within normal range and I can get back to the gym and get stronger then I will talk about surgery but there is no way my body could take that. He argued with me and reminded me that he was the doctor and Bill heard me sigh right before I asked him how many times he had opperated on me...he replied none I said good, since I have had this body through 9 major surgeries, that qualifis me as an expert on what this body can and cannot handle so we will be doing it my way not yours. He looked to Bill and hubby said "I agree with her, she knows her body and she would not survive that kind of surgery right now". The specialist was ticked off but that is just too bad. I told him he had until the first week of October to get his act together because I am going to North Georgia to get my babies then no excuses, no restrictions no warnings and that is that. I promised him one more month of me staying within a couple hours from home but that is all he is getting.

So between grocery shopping, ER and endo you do not even want to know how much money was spent I nearly cried. Anyone got extra bologna they can send me? Hahahahahahaha. Oh I did I mention I really hate uncontrolled cows?

Jo was so sweet this morning...I went down to pay morning homage and she put her muzzle against my forehead and just breathed slowly onto my face while I rubbed her face and neck and told her everything was okay and would be fine. When I turned to leave she yelled and pitched a fit so I went back and she did the same thing so I told her it was not her fault, it was the cow's fault and thanked her for coming to help me and I stood there with her like for about 20 minutes and then came back to the house...she was still stressing a bit, pacing and pitching a small tantrum. I can honestly say she really is an amazing Diva...spoiled brat but today she knew I was hurt and she acted like I was supposed to stay there with her under her watchful eye and warm breath. All this time I thought she just tolerated me but she may actually be starting to like me for more than just food, treats and to scare away frightening things. I sort of wonder if her protecting me is a repayment for the night she was scared out of the stall and I went back into the barn in front of her yelling at and hitting everything in sight and in her stall to make sure there was nothing there, letting her know the coast was clear and nothing would hurt her? I wish animals could speak English. Then again I am not sure I want Jo speaking English...she would probably say some sinful things on those Diva days.

Oh and cow owner...what a jackass of the highest sort. I had to watch my duckie like a hawk this evening because I had Mounds out by herself and she was playing in the mud puddle in front of the house....that jerk off was flying down the road....I had to go out and step in front of him so he would not hit her. I said "Dude see the sign? 5 MPH slow down". He said get your darn duck out of the road or else. I just glared at him and said "Cows gone yet? Let me know on your LAST trip out of here because I have an ER bill for you to reimburse for the cracked ribs your cow caused me....$900.00 that I paid and I prefer CASH no checks". He called me a biotch and I looked at him and said "You keep saying that and I have yet to become one but it is coming I promise now slow down!" When Ginny came home from work, he was flying down the road leaving as she was coming in. She stopped her car, got out and started herding Mounds out of the puddle into the yard and then stood there and talked to me for about 4 minutes while he sat there blowing his horn being ignored by both of us. Hahahahahahaha. I love having a private road. We are thinking we will park our cars strategically on the road so he has to drive through a maze of 7 vehicles, forcing him to slow down. Jerk!

Okay time for my bath and more sleep. Nighty night all

Is there a good time to call you on Wednesday? I've got some errands to run first thing in the morning, but I would so love to sit down to a nice long chat with you. I'm sure there's a heck of a lot more to these stories, and I'm dying to hear all about them!

As for the fidiot cow owner, tell him to save himself a whole butt load of trouble and just pay the bill. It's either that or you go after him for pain and suffering and punitive damages! At just paying your medical bills, he'd be getting off dirt cheap!.....................Ya know, on second thought, that twit deserves to have the book thrown at him. Take his sorry arse to court dear! The only way some of these half brained inbred nitwits ever learn is to hit them in the pocket book and hit 'em HARD! Oh, and let Jo take a chunk out of the pocket that holds his pocket book too!!

Afternoon on this time zone would be good....I am just now getting ready to go back to sleep for a bit. Could finally take a pain pill and it is kicking in. Say around 1ish in the afternoon your time...

the $900...that is my share portion as close as they could figure...that is not the entire bill darn leeches, there will also be labs and meds to add to it. Trust me he will see me in Court but I want a surveillance system set up for the property perimeter that I can see and monitor at all times...even via my cell phone. I do not trust this dirtbag as far as I can throw him.

Good grief, Ladyhawk! You have wayyyyyyyy too much drama going on there! I am glad I don't have crazy neighbors like that. Hope you heal quickly. You do know that you need REST to heal, don't you? Yes, you know that, though I doubt you will do it. GO TO BED!

I just woke up since I was asleep by 8:30 last night. I think I have a pinched nerve or something. The pain started in my neck a few days ago. It has now worked its way down into my right shoulder. Hurts like heck and I can hardly use the computer.
