Scott (har).....
I was just thinking about you. I hope your hatch goes well. It is getting close! I can hardly wait!
Aren't you bored with my pictures? You have seen them all in person.

Amy,
You need to have a rooster farm.

To me roosters are for 2 things only; breeders or freezer filler. I have no time to train a rooster and if he isn't just naturally sweet and kind, he goes to camp. I do not want to breed that meanness and take a chance of getting more. So far, of all of the roosters we have had (which is alot) our all time favorite was Jacob. We just adored that one, and still miss him and talk about him. The only reason he is gone is because he carried the dwarfing gene, and I could not use him. I just have too many chickens to keep "pets only." Just recently I had to cull 2 Ameraucana boys out. I about cried and was very reluctant when handing one to a friend of mine. He was one of my favorites and would come right to me when he saw me. I did think about keeping him in the rooster pen, but knew that would be no life for him. He was not breeder material, so he had to go. She got a sweet rooster in that boy.

Good morning, all!

Nella, you cannot stuff me in a trunk, my butt is too big- Kathy those are GREAT girls. I want the best two, and Nella can have the rest.

Laura, yay babies! Hey, you could let Bully in with the girls for a few days, then stew him and incubate the eggs, just in case. He is good looking!

Cetawin, my dear, Jo does not need shoes, has never needed shoes, she just needs a farrier who knows how to trim that one front foot correctly, as she wears the heel down faster on it. She had one of the finest farriers in this area, he used to take care of all the Biltmore horses, and he NEVER suggested shoes. You got ripped off, woman, and I would report that dufous to the KY Farrier association. What a jerk- too bad Jo didn't bite him! And you could get an A on that paper if you just expand a little and tell them how all that peace and quiet makes you FEEL. Explicitly.

Sweet roosters that must go - I know. I have one Del roo from Kathy that I just love - he comes up to me with the sweetest expression and lets me pet him - but alas, he is not a breeder. I wonder if I can keep him in the horse barn?????

*sigh* So much for trying to sneak past you two. I have the camera, I had it in my hand. Then I saw my best blue Orp hen huddled up in the corner, and went to find that the nasty Del pullets had been picking at her all day, so I did some pen switching. And then I noticed that my DH, who had PROMISED to dig me post holes has not done a single one, so I struggled with the post hole digger until dark and forgot the camera entirely. Ummm- tonight?

I have a cute story regarding those Del pullets and the pen switiching. There are seven pullets, and I had put three older girls who need rooster recovery time in with them. Those pullets are barbarians, I tell you, every night I had to pull them off the divider between them and Impy and force them into the coop, and one kept flying in with Impy no matter how high I built the barrier, and they peck and pull at me constantly, and they yack and complain and get underfoot, etc. etc. Hooligans. Juvenile Delinquents. Teenage Wild Girls. Typical Dels. Anyway - I moved the three recovery hens into Impy's pen and put him in with the Del pullets for now to try to teach them some manners. O MY GOSH!!! The look on his face - if a rooster's jaw could drop, his would have been on the ground. I shooshed him in there, and he stopped dead, looked at those 7 plump, flirting little faces, and turned and looked at me as if to say " You mean it? I am not dreaming? MINE?????" Then he slowly made his way through the mob, eyeballing them, and they got really quiet. It stayed quiet. At bedtime, I went out, thinking I would have to pull a few down and stuff them into the coop again, and there was only ONE outside the coop, eyeing the divider. Then I heard Impy - a very stern 'CLUCK CLUCK CLUCK" from inside the coop, and that one girl went RACING up the ramp, flapping her wings and into the coop as fast as her little butt could go. This morning, all order and politeness.

Ah, I have learned the value of a good rooster!

Woman your butt is not too big for a trunk...with some twisting and the proper amount of force one of us could manage to stuff you in a trunk and steal you from NC. Hehehehe. As for the farrier, I have already called Keenland and spoke to the Sales manager and barn manager, filled them in and went to two feed stores where he has business cards and "slid" his cards off the counter and into my purse! I have a great farrier and he loves Jo's feet but he could not get out for a couple of weeks and I did not want to wait. This guy really hacked me off because he kept his body between my line of sight and her hoof while she was being a bit "naughty" and whenever her hoof was in my line of sight, he dropped it. At one point I even said to him "I will gladly pay an additional $25 if you can return on your way home tomorrow when my husband is here". Unfortunately he had seen all the blacksmithing stuff in the barn so he immediately could not get back out here for several weeks. I should have just told him to trim her and I would have her vet come out and check her over. Heck $45 for a trim and $35 for Dr. Mason to come out and it would have been cheaper than his 232.00 and Jo could have seen her favorite person....Dr. Mason. I called Dr. Mason and spoke to him about it and he was furious, he has placed said Farrier on their blacklist which is not a good thing to be placed on Hagyards blacklist. So they will never refer anyone to him now. Hopefully, it will damage his buesiness with the racehorse community as Hagyards are the official vets for the racing commission. I may call them too about this jerk water. Grrrrrrr. Anyway, Jesse will be out to trim her and etc in about 5 weeks and I will have him snatch the shoes off unless Jo gets rid of them first.

My good rooster story will devastate Amy for life

Rir rooster. He got his butt whooped by my old JG rooster......I got rid of the aggressive JG so Mr RIR inherited the flock. You had never seen such a proud boy. One of the first nights he was in charge, one of the hens was late going to the coop. He stood in the doorway crowing for her til she got it together and went in. He used to do the predator scream if I went into the coop after dark......

But he was really hard on the hens. No finesse and never took no for an answer....they were all bald soon. He went adios and was replaced by my old big blue cochin rooster.....who was eventually overthrown by his son, my current blue cochin roo. Daddy blue was sold back to his previous home where he heads up her cochin pen.

Cetawin, good for you! I hope that snake wakes up when some of his clients start dumping him- what a thug. Jo might just get rid of those shoes, those white hooves can be softer. I think your Jesse knows what he is doing, and Jo is in great hands with him. Is she pouting about the shoes?

Nella, that is a cool picture! Love the color of that bird.

I have decided Impy's old space will become a Hen Hospital for the girls that need Rooster Recovery Time. But its rapidly becoming more girls than not, so I am thinking of building Rooster Row, where I can put the boys instead - how much room does a single rooster need to be happy? Would a 2 x 4 space work if it was a tractor moved to fresh grass everyday? How about one tractor divided down the middle that was 4 x 4, half roofed - it wouldn't be so heavy to move, and if I use hardware cloth as a divider, the roosters would have company without being able to fight - dumb idea or would it work? Or should it be bigger? I have real trouble moving my 6 x 8's by myself, they are just too heavy.
