Congrats, Kathy!

Oh, as I was waking up, the time when my brain actually functions well (no jokes, please, LOL), I had a bit of a revelation about Caroline. Bear with me a moment for my thought process, if you're interested, that is: I don't think her main issue is the crop. It isn't actually blocked or impacted, just a bit soured from whatever that thing is she ate-frog, maybe? blech!- her poop is solid this morning so stuff is getting through her system, and she was having a fit to get out of the cage.

What I think is that the fact of the crop not processing that thing properly and her noticeable weight loss could be related to the same thing that killed Miranda, which I'm about 99% sure was ovarian cancer, with the way it presented, coupled with what happened to Reba and what we found inside Reba, their ages being the same, all hatchery hens, etc. She is bright eyed, not in molt, great feather quality, laying still just like Miranda was about three weeks before her death, just has lost quite a bit of weight suddenly for an inexplicable reason.

Miranda also had crop issues once her body started going downhill and lost quite a bit of weight in the last weeks before she died and started retaining lots of fluid. Caroline's abdomen doesn't feel particularly large at the moment, but this is probably just beginning. So, what do you think? Could I be on the right, though very sad, track here? Maybe Caroline, due to her advanced age for a hatchery girl, be suffering from the same thing that killed Miranda?

Congrats on the arrival of the F3's, Kathy! Job well done lady!

Cyn, I have no idea, but it sounds reasonable. If only money were no object and we could afford to have these matters investigated by competent vets. Knowing how resilient chickens are, even at such advanced ages, it would be so nice to be able to afford treatment.

I hope Caroline pulls through this. She reminds me so much of my dear old Brewenna. It's so dang hard to lose those sweet girls. Especially when you think you might know what is wrong but are powerless to change it. Hang in there Cyn and do keep us posted.

Well, that hard small lump is still in her crop, but it's not clogged up and very pliable, so she may have found that little light colored frog that was hopping around the fence the other day-feels about the right size, but of course, I'm just guessing wildly. That would explain her acting like she was having trouble swallowing something and boy, I'd sure have indigestion if I ate a frog, LOL.

I want her to drink the medicated water today and eat the yogurt laced with olive oil and vitamins then if she is still pooping solid stuff, I may just return her to the coop. Any idea how long it takes a frog to go through the system??? Ick.

ETA: Tom massaged her crop again and he said the lump felt rather like a free-floating tumor. Who knows? She's definitely lost weight or I'd just think she ate something that was having a hard time getting out of the crop and was souring a bit.

Anyone want a hateful, limping, specialty breed orp hen with spurs? She is getting better and nastier about being inside. Lmao
