Sebastopol geese - selecting breeding stock, color genetics, and color improvement

Pics
Wow, what a great thread.

I bought a new little didgital camera to enable me to finally get a whole bunch of pics and pic out the good ones to share. Now, I have to learn to use it.

One pair (from celtic) is I guess called splash, they have only a few gray spots on their necks (biggest spot is the size of a half doller, most pea sized) and gray under their wings, and a few stray feathers on their backs.
Congrats on the new camera. Looking forward to new pics!
not yet... but only 2 geese are laying... I've still got one that was supose to be a girl but acts like a kicked out batchlor

so we are still watching

However the SB sebbies are both hissy and the other 2 are not... I'm guessing their genders are right.

Today it was 67F...we spent all day outside working...as tomorrow we're expecting a high of 22F, 50+ mph winds, and 3-7 inches of snow..then on Tuesday we're expecting MORE snow! Gah!!
peasue it has been snowing like crazy here in Troy, MO since 10:00am this morning not sure how much is on the ground. It is now with the sleet. This storm is a mess! Sure hope I can get to dialysis tomorrow!!!

Glad to know the new birds (sebbies) are turning out to be sexed correctly.

You have at least a gander in the new dewlaps.

Sorry about all of the snow, I cant remember deep snow its been so long since we were stationed where it snowed. Dont miss it one ounce.
Snow is fun..if you do not have to go outside to feed animals, but instead wrap up in a blanket and read a good book! LOL
Thanks Shellie and peasue I went out when the snow started to feed and gather more eggs from the girls. I made sure to feed enough then to not have to go back out in it when it got deep or slipery.
I go in a bit later in the morning before 8:00 am. Usually go in before 6:00am. My husband will take me in the truck and pick me up. The hill we have to go down is very steep and it is a B$%$% to get up in this weather.

We have a back way to come in but these pople that live on that property do not want people using that road. I thought that any road that had road signs or street signs you could use unless it says NO thuro through. Anyway they have taken it upon themselfs to put big ditches on both sides of the road and have super high speed bumps, so high a regular car can not use it period. There is a road committy and they are investagating into it to see if these people have the right to do this.

We need an emergency exit out from here and that is they only way!!!?????

I took a bunch of pictures this evening, I'll try and post them in a bit. We skipped Church this morning so we could start getting all the animals ready for the cold weather, so we're going to have it here in a bit.

Hi CelticOaksFarm and Everyone

I have some photos of some of my geese to share, I'd love some ideas about the colours!
Here in Australia our goose colours are not so varied as in the US or UK, but I'm still confused

Female #1 - Saddleback Mum x White Dad (Maternal Grandma had multi-coloured stripes on wings)

Female #2 - Unknown Breeding

Female #3 - Buff Mum x White Dad

I have a girl like your #3!
Mom was smoothbreast buff and dad was curly white. She has a bit of blue like that on her bum and a perfect little "choker" of color on her neck. She is paired with a white gander. Everything I hatched from them last year was splash like Mom.

Looks like goose #2 carries buff with the buff colorling in the white. The other looks#3 to carry either blue or grey on the white..

Goose and Fig I read that too, if a female has a buff gene she is meant to be visually buff!! That said if geese are anything like chickens who knows what hides under white, often chook genetic rules get, er, stretched. I wonder if the buff really needs to be "whole body".
Would you call the #3 splash then? She also has buffy ribbons, as well as the blue/grey back, and a pink beak and feet rather than orange.
RURU I would love to think buff in #2! She is a lovely little girl and travelled a long way to get here.
All my current sebs are coming up to their breeding season, and I need to choose their mates before they organise themselves!!.

Thank you!!

If females do not carrie buff then are you for sure #2 is a goose? Because I see buff colored feathers on that goose.... I am not real good with know the buff breeding but that sure looks Buff to me on that goose. Looks like a splash of color because it is splashed in places all over the one side.

Pete has not been on here lately and he would be able to explain this to us very well. If you can not have whites carrring the buff gene that they can only show it by being buff. I need to be explained to of why you white a female which is showing buff feathers??? This would also mean that you can not have a Buff splash female either just males.
You can have grey, blue or lavender splash females I guess.
