Sebastopol geese - selecting breeding stock, color genetics, and color improvement

Pics
Thank you so much. Im hoping to get a mature pair if I can, even if I have to wait until next year, if I cant find anything in fall; Then get another pair elsewhere and switch their mates. That way Im not inbreeding. I know as far as colors thats sometimes unavoidable, but I really hope to find some quality whites, since like you said the white Sebs are established and its harder to find quality coloreds since they are still being worked on and perfected. I would love to work on colors but I think whites are a great foothold starting out. Ive seen some nice coloreds on the forum though. I love Sebs I think they are beautiful. How much does it typically cost to have birds shipped from other states; I suppose it depends on how much they weigh. But can anyone give me an estimate for shipping an adult goose?:D

IMO even good quality whites can be hard to find. Should you be tempted to buy day olds,
unless you buy young adults or older adults you don't know what you will get.
Even people selling day olds out of show stock
does not not guarantee you will get show quality babies...so may I suggest you do your homework,
network here with other breeders and take your time before you buy.

Hi, this thread is just what I was looking for. My male sebastopol mated with my African goose and I hatched out some very pretty "splash" geese. They are around 8 months old now. Are they considered Sebastopols or are they a mix?

I'm trying to upload pictures but I don't know what's happening. The upload information disappears and the pictures don't show up. So, I will have to use pictures that are a couple of months old. The birds have changed a bit since but at least you can let me know what you think.

There are 6 offspring and the goose on the right is an adult. What I feel are the females they have less color in the feathers. The feathers are starting to get wavy and I'm just noticing the long feathers starting to show up on the males.

If I can figure out how to post updated pictures I will gladly add those.

My male "mix" or "splash" looking goose is mating back with the African. So far I have 2 that look more Sebastopol and 2 that have a little more of the African. The bills of the youngest have some black in them as well as the feet. I should say dark gray. They still have the yellow down on them. The oldest one has lost a lot of it's down and the white feathers are coming in. I haven't seen any color in it yet.

I want to sell them and would like to know how much would I ask for these geese. I'm positive the ones that look more like the African goose would bring a different price then the ones that look like the Sebastopols. I just don't know if they will be as curly as the parent. Should I wait till the feather out before I sell them? I would like to continue trying for the splash colors in them.

Thanks Chris

No they are hybrids/mutts just like if you crossed a cocker spaniel with a poodle but hey they are lovely and have fun with them.
Don't know what mixed breed geese go for. Probably not much.

Sorry but breeding a sebastopol to an african is not recomended. You will have to sell all of them as pets and I have no idea of how much you ask for just hybrid/mutts.

Thank you everyone. Yes, that helps a lot. Ok, my next question is. How do you get pure breed Sebastopols that have color? I thought they are all white. How do they pick up color? I find all this so interesting.

The geese in the beginning of this thread almost look like American Buffs or Toulouse with curly feathers. They are beautiful. So, the best thing to do is keep my male separate from my American Buff and African females during breeding season?

Yes Sebastopols were/are outcrossed to different breeds (Americans, Toulouse, Poms) to get color of course but then it takes several generations to refine them to the standard. Africans are not a good choice to cross to since they are so extremely different type wise. Of course you can cross breed any geese you want to keep or sell but to sell an F1 cross as a "Sebastopol" would not be advisable.

Here are pictures of what they look like right now. I wish I could have gotten better pictures. The first bird looks a bit gray but in fact he's pure white and so are the others only with splash of colors. They wouldn't stay still this morning when I was trying to take pictures.
