Sebright chicks dying

Hi their mam, I hope that this can help you a little bit!!!!!!! I've went to one of my buddies farms within Alabama, and long story short, I ended getting Red Star chicks from him, and he said that, "Since I've bought five from me, I'll give you five if my choice". I said okay perfect, I get 10 birds total OK cool. Well he gave me the chicken breed "Cornish Cross", I've then left n went home with them bin the same box. Well long story short, it was a Bio Hazard. I had 26 baby chicks before I've put them in with the rest if my baby chicks that I've had, and within hours my flock was dead. Only 3-4 made it, n the rest of them died within 3 days, "jus dying after one another". Well the birds have had the time to spread parcites through my flock. It's the paracite that starts with the "C," word. N no not the naughty word. After we've got meds from the flock, n separated the sick birds they've been good. All of the Cornish Cross chickens were put down by me. I haven't had one die since then. Go to the vet n tell them what is happening, n he/she will write you a script. Also if they are pooping blood do the same thing that I've told you to do, because that's an inside infection from the bottom side, he/she will write you a script. It'll kill whatever it is, n then please make sure that the baby chicks have their electrolights, sorry for my spelling!!!!!!! I hope that my story can help you figure out what has been done to your chickens. Oh n by the way I have over 95 chickens on my small farm as we speak. They're awesome. Well have a good rest of the evening, n if you want to reply then please feel free to do so. Thank you for your time, n I'll be awaiting for you to get back at me!!!!!!!

Look for any bugs. I put diatomatious earth food grade mixed it into my bedding so bad parasites and bugs will die. We started giving our birds clean play sand for grit. We know starter has grit in it but we wanted to make sure they were digesting their food properly. We constantly give them fresh distilled water. We let the water from the tap sit for 24 hours or so to get chlorine out. That could be your problem. Buy distilled water at store untill you can let tap water sit to get chlorine out. I'm hoping I helped you let us know your progress...

Just for info----not saying you are right or wrong on this. All I will say is my water comes straight out the "city" water that you can smell the chlorine in---it goes straight into sometimes 25 waterers for up to 25 brooders and several 100 chicks at one time and I have a very small amount of dead chicks out of the 1000's I have raised. So it does not hurt here!

As far as distilled-----I do not know---I never gave it to mine. My Mother-in-law would buy fish for her Aquarium and they would die and she would get some more and they would die----found out she was using distilled water in it---she got some regular water from a well and has not had anymore problems??? But I still do not know?

some interesting replies on this one, so I'll give mine. I really like sebrights but every batch I have got, several just die, I've convinced myself that they are a week breed because I've not had this happen with any of my other chicks. I may be off base with my theory but that's my experience.

I have hatched a decent amount of them and have min death----so we both gave our experience!! The last 2 hatches I did of them was silver and golden and none have died so far, but they are only a few weeks old.

I appreciate all the help. I haven't had another death this past week using the suggestions you all gave. However I also have some silks and Japanese bantams about a week younger. I keep trying to introduce the 2 groups but they just attack one another. Any advice?

Three weeks is too young without heat if it is 68 degrees. They might be able to adjust if you were slowing decreasing the temps down. They should go from 95 the first week, down 5 degrees to 80 degrees at 4 weeks old.

To understand how to provide heat for chicks, it helps to know WHY chicks need heat. Down is a poor insulator, so chicks need a heat source to warm up. As they feather in, the better they can retain their own body heat, and the less supplemental heat is needed. Equally important is a cool zone so they can rid themselves of excess heat. You need to be sure you are only heating one small spot, and the rest of the brooder is at room temp. A 100 watt bulb might even be too much. Try it and see. Watch the chicks. If they cluster under the heat lamp in a tight pile, they are chilly. If they are spread out as far from each other and the heat as they can possibly get, they are too warm. If they are panting, they are seriously overheating.

Ditto, right on. you have to move that heat lamp so they can get away from it. But after three weeks with no heat they may have been cold at 80 degrees but I would think it may be something else now. I used paper towels once with some chicks and I saw they were shredding the paper and swallowing it. I replaced it with brown paper grocery bags, thick so they couldn't shreds it.

Very interesting. Could just be a weak breed. Cocci also good possibility.
