sebright thread

This pic makes me think boy. Females don't really have any comb (just a flat area where the comb should be) for a very, very long time. Mine had nothing until she was about ready to lay.

Here is Henrietta or is it Henry? It's just about 6 weeks old now and I was hoping for some opinions, cockerel or pullet. I am really hoping for pullet but I can see the signs...

There is definitely some red coming through now in the comb, but there is still some black on the comb too, near the beak. Picked it out at tractor supply in the bantam bin. View attachment 1770820 View attachment 1770822 View attachment 1770823

Definitely a cockerel. My sebright actually started crowing at 3-4 weeks, I wish I had a decent phone to record it because it's very strange as he still only has a chick voice, it sounds like some sort of weird machine noise!! He's still doing it now and his voice still hasn't broken. But yes that is 100% a cockerel.

Our tough Sebright (named Trouble) turned 4 years old today. She's been broody and sitting on decorative rock eggs for a couple weeks. I slipped 2 pipped eggs under her this afternoon. One has already hatched, and I'll be gradually loading her up with chicks tomorrow. "Happy Hatch Day, Trouble!" x2

I just peeked in on her:

Meanwhile in the incubator....

More pics of cuteness:

Trouble has accepted all 20 chicks. Here they are at bedtime.

* Because she cannot actually contain 20 chicks, I just put her inside the brooder with them. Eventually enough chicks will sell & she can free range with her brood once the number is manageable.

My little Sebright hen, Moonshine with her Spitzhauben chicks who are rapidly gaining on her in size at 3 1/2 weeks. Giving them a bug lesson...

Here's Moonshine at 4.5 weeks:

If you look thru this thread, you will see red combs fairly early on the little cockerels. That's my only reference, I've never had one.

I've only had the one Sebright. What a character. She has gone broody so much in her 2 years, that I finally gave her eggs to hatch. She's such a good mama.
@Faraday40 , how is Trouble doing with her 20 babies? She must be more tolerant than Moonshine, who abandoned a late hatching egg, and would not, under any circumstances, accept that chick which I tried to give back when it was just hours old.
Now, 3 weeks later, the orphan is in an adjoining pen, and she attacks it thru the mesh at every opportunity. My only hope is that the siblings will get to know it.
