Second handing for chickens

I like to get things second hand for the coop. (I like cupboards and dressers for nest boxes.)

Today I got all these items on the side of the road for free!

This long cupboard, it is tall enough for a feed bag, and a bag of nest straw.

Below was this door with a window- it is ugly and I hung it upside-down (let me explain.)
One side is painted an ugly-gray white color, and this side was natural. I wanted the natural side, plus this way the chickens can look out the window. I replaced a indoor door that was hanging there, and it was warped.

Below in a floor cabinet with no bottom. I aimed the bottomless part towards a coop area that was designed for a nest box but I didn't have one.

Ugly and functional.

Oh I love doing this! Chicken keeping on the cheap! I dont have photos but I use the top of a roadside bookshelf to hold my waterer and I built a compost/seed tower out of an old baby gate in the corner of the run. We also got some big stumps from a tree the neighbor cut down to use around the run and an enclosed cat box we were given to use as a nesting box. We'll see how that goes since I just set it up today but so far they seem interested!

We built our coop on the bed of an old trailer we found. My run is built on the frame of a green house that my neighbor "wanted out of here. And that metal stuff too." That "stuff" was the basis for the extension of my run last summer. The same neighbor gave me what was left over on a roll of hardware cloth, after I made a compost bin for her.

Barter! Free! Repurposing! I love it!

My favorite roadside pick up. I'd been looking into buying one, so when it turned up across the street, I quickly sent hubby to grab it and walk it back over:

I always wanted to try a cat tower for chickens, and I like the turtle, could be a good feeder, cover it at night to keep out mice.

I also got a second hand cat liter box with cover, (it was cleaned.) I am using that for a nest box. Funny all my nest boxes are cabinets, or dressers I picked up second hand. I have 10 available for about 11 lay hens and they like using 3 of them. (I know they get their favorite, and 11 need 4 nest boxes tops, but I like having nest boxes around.

I needed curtains, so i went second handing. My room was ski themed since we have a log house. I bought ski poles for the rod, and curtains with metal rings, fit this window exactly.
