Second order from McMurray, DEAD

I think that everyone needs to keep in mind when ordering chicks:
First the USPS closing a lot of sorts and local offices. Second they should look for the ones that are closer to you. If in Kentucky you are really close to MT Healthy hatchery. There is also one in Northern Ohio, Meyer hatchery. Lots of people are losing jobs. Those that lost their entire chick package should ask for money back and order closer to you. Sorry about your lose.

I ordered chicks for the first time ever this year. I went through McMurray. I got 25 + 2 free, and 26 are healthy and alive 5 days after I received them! One was DOA and smushed flat in the box. HOWEVER, I will state that the shipping and receiving process was brutally stressful for me, and I don't know that I will ever buy mail order chicks again.

So then Saturday morning I wake up and see a voicemail on my phone from 4:10 a.m. on Saturday stating that my chicks shipped and are on their way.

My local PO is only open fro 9-11 a.m., so I spent 2 hours trying to figure out HOW was I going to receive these chicks if the dang PO isn't even open?! I made phone call after phone call trying to figure out if these chicks really did ship, where would they be going since the PO would be closed?!

Finally I resigned myself to the fact that the chicks would arrive on Monday and probably be all dead! It was February in the upper Midwest, after all...

At 9:00 p.m. Saturday night I got a phone call from the PO distribution center 65 miles away from house to come get my chicks! Seriously? I was so relieved they were available for pickup! Hubby and I threw on our clothes and headed out for the 130 mile round trip. We got the chicks in their brooder and all was done by MIDNIGHT.

This whole time, the shipping confirmation number showed nothingon the USPS site, so I couldn't follow where they were. It was so confusing....did the chicks NOT actually ship out?? I didn't even know since the tracking # showed nothing online.

When I picked up the chicks, the guy at the distrubiton center said that hatcheries SHOULD NOT ship chicks on the weekend. It creates too much hassle for everyone involved.

So I called MM to complain. The customer service rep. seemed very annoyed with me. She was not terribly pleasant. But whatever. I asked her WHAT would have happened if I had not been in a position to drive 130 miles round trip to pick up these babies? She said they would have gone to my local PO on Monday morning.

So - 3 days in a box in the cold?! What happens then?! She said they would reimburse me for any losses. She also stated that this is why people order EXTRAS because they know there could be heavy losses if the chicks are boxed for 3 days.

Ok I'm sorry but that is just cruel. THIS SYSTEM IS BROKEN. I was absolutely sick over the 1 that died. Can't imagine having lost more. Taping live animals up in boxes for days at a time with no food, no water, no heat, no care.....that is WRONG. I can order a freaking bath towel on Ebay and get it shipped express overnight, but chicks can ONLY got 3-5 day priority. ***. Seriously. W....T....F....

I read some posts where people keep mentioning the weird shipping on weekend thing that MM does. I asked the customer service rep about that and she was really crabby about it. She said that the Post Office ONLY ALLOWS THEM TO SHIP ON FRIDAYS. NO OTHER TIME. PERIOD. Weird that no other hatcheries have this stupid rule imposed upon them!

Yes the distribution centers sort all weekend, but if your distribution center is 60 or 80 miles away from your home, then you decide to make the round trip at 9:00 on a Saturday night, or let the chicks take their chances until they are driven to your local PO on Monday.

STUPID. Very very stupid.

On the USPS website under rules for shipping live stock, it clearly states, All shipments must be sent so they do not arrive on a Sunday or on the afternoon before a Sunday. I don't see why the USPS let's them ship on thurs or Fridays.

According to MM Customer Service, the USPS ONLY lets them ship on Fridays, so that is weird.

I like that MM offers so many unusual breeds, and their website and videos and everything are awesome. I just hate the stupid weekend shipping thing. I only live 7 hours from them. I should just drive there and pick the chicks up myself instead of relying on the PO.

Wow, Such heavy losses. That's terrible....I think they should automatically put heat in the box before April. I know it costs more but people would pay it....

I just got 27 baby chicks from Ameraucana breeder John Blehm, who is up in Michigan.

The babies were shipped US Priority Mail on Tuesday afternoon. I got a phone call from my local Post Office at 8:30 in the morning, telling me my baby chicks were at the post office. Within the hour, 27 happy, healthy baby chicks were in my brooder, exploring their new home.

I can't imagine any hatchery or breeder shipping chicks at the end of the week. John Blehm always ships his on Tuesdays, and I always get them the very next day -- even though Tennessee is pretty far from Michigan.

I was going to order some chicks from mm and then i got to the shipping and handling i wanted 25 chick which was about $80.00....they wanted 45 dollars for shipping so if the post office gets that you'd think they would be responsible for replacement.

So i just would not pay that much. but i found a great deal in Sandpoint' Id. at Carter Country Feed where i got my chicks and paid same amount for them with my shipping at $16.00 I got all of them in 6 days they are alive and well except for one who just did not make it. So i ordered 25 and now have 26..SHOP local if you can.

Going on 5 days old and all 27 of my chicks from McMurray are alive and thriving... This is our first order of chicks, and first of owning them. I am very grateful they are thriving.
