seems depressed. opening beak a bit occasionally to breathe. acting slow and lazy. non sociable.

Let us know the results of the fecal test...thank you.
Yea, worms or bugs would suck the blood out of her and make her anemic and weak. I hope the hen has something fixable.

When does a chicken become a pet? When you have a $200 vet bill and it is living in your dining room.

Long day at the vet. 3 things going on.
Impacted Crop--very infected, size of a fist. How did I not notice this? I am new to this, I had no idea that was her crop because it was so big. She has lost a lot off weight. This has been going on for a while. They flushed it 3 times at the vet, had her a good part of the day. They didn't want to stress her because she is so week, but they said it was extremely nasty.

2) Blackhead disease--not very common, may have picked it up from worms, from free ranging or possibly only got it because she was already so sick with the crop that it weakened her immunity

3) Words of the vet "a bit of cocci" again, maybe because she was so sick with the crop thing

I have 2 medications to give her orally twice daily with a syringe. Amprolium in the water--which I had on hand. Additionally I need to feed her with a sirynge every 3 hours till she gets strength to eat and drink on her own. tomorrow will be tough because I work, but only for 6 hours. I am already off for the rest of the week so if we get to tomorrow afternoon we should be fine.

she is at home, but in critical condition at this point.

I brought in stool samples from the other birds, and I already have them on Amprolium as preventative. Hopefully the other birds are not sick and she just got it because of her crop. It will be nearly impossible to get my other birds to take oral medication through a syringe if they are not feeling weak and sidk <<<<not that I am wishing that on anyone.
I might try to pick up a feeding tube tomorrow afternoon if she makes it through the night and still isnt eating. Would they have them at Petco? They only had them for cows at Fleet farm. The vet told me to just use the syringe, but the tube actually looks easier on the videos above . Thanks for your help everyone. Please say an extra prayer for Chip tonight.

Some use aquarium tubing from Walmart--it fits the end of regular syringes, not the catheter tip ones. If you can get a 35 cc/ml regular syringe, it should fit the tubing. Casportpony says to heat the end of the tubing to make it rounded, and less irritating to insert into the esophagus.

Thanks everyone for all of your help and support. Sadly, Chip started showing more signs of the cocci right after my last update, including the twisting of the neck. I tried to get as much into her as I could without stressing her out too much, but either the weekend was too long, or the day was to much for her. Ive been cleaning, and bleaching and crying ever since. It's not the same as bringing chickens for butcher. She was our very favorite.

Hopefully tomorrow they will net me know about the other 4 remaining birds. I hope they are fine, I don't really want to go through this again.
R.I.P Chip

I'm so sorry for your loss. Hugs.

Sorry you lost her. FYI and future reference: Blackhead is a protozoa. The cecal worm is host for the protozoa. To treat for blackhead; give one tablet of metronidazole 250mg orally for 5 days to each infected bird. Then worm your birds with either valbazen liquid cattle/sheep wormer or safeguard liquid goat wormer. Dosage for either product is give orally undiluted 1/2cc. Redose in 10 days. Both products will kill the cecal worms and other types of worms as well.

Thanks for your well wishes everyone.

Talked to the vet today. There are trace signs of cocci in the other birds and also eggs for the protozoa for the blackhead.

The birds are still all acting healthy.

I tried to check them to see what their crops felt like and none of them will come near me. As a matter of fact, Monkey, my other Welsummer who is normally very friendly would talk toward me, and barely let me pet her, and then scoot away. And one of my other chichens looked like she was going to attach me.

Apparently they all think I am the Angle of Death now. ( 2 weeks ago, we pulled 2 roosters out to butcher and they never came back either)

There is no way I will be able to give medicine unless it is in their water or their food.
