seems depressed. opening beak a bit occasionally to breathe. acting slow and lazy. non sociable.

So, Vet recommended a pea siized ammt of the safe guard paste daily for 3 days while we treat with amprolium. This might take care of the Blackhead, and if it does per fecal tests we might not need to use the metronidazole.

Day 1. trying it on a small piece of bread, as chickens still view me as the angel of death. I have been trying to pet them but they either run away or I get pecked. I now have a bleeding thumb. LOL

I took their food out last night so they would be hungry. brought out 4 small pieces of bread ( 1 slice cut 4 ways minus crust. I was hoping to get one to go in the ben and then shut the door, one to go in the run and shut the ramp and 1 upstairs in the coop with the 4th in any of these 3 places. Just to separate and make sure each one got one. It snowed this morning and nobody will go outside, so that didn't work. Even hungry, they didn't want the bread. Pecked at it some...I sprinkled the safeguard part with a few pieces of food. They ate some. I put some jelly on the bread, they ate some.

Now I know whay she wants me to do this for 3 days LOL. Maybe it would be easier to catch them at night and do it with a syringe?

Note: at this time, they all seem to be acting healthy. They're all acting normal, other than the fact they want nothing to do with me. I almost got to feel Monkey and Ginger's crop this morning, will keep trying.

I inject Valbazen into those dried meal worms, their hollow inside and they eat it right up. Easy just have to make sure no one grabs the other guys dose. Good luck.

The book my vet showed me on Tuesday said the amount to treat the cecal worm is 50mg/kg, but I have also seen properly ducumented info saying that 20mg/kg three days in a row does the trick. I'm lazy, so I choose to go with the "catch them once and get it over with method".

It's important to understand how much your bird weighs and how many mg/kg your bird should get. Giving too little worming medication can cause resistance to wormers. Do you have any idea how many mg's of wormer are in a "pea size" amount? Well I was curious, so I measured it.

From left to right:
Small = 10mg ( .1cc) = enough for a 200 gram (7 ounce) bird at 50mg/kg
Medium = 25mg (.25cc) = enough for a 500 gram (17 ounce) bird at 50mg/kg
Large = 50mg ( .5cc) = enough for a 1000 gram (35 ounce) bird at 50mg/kg
50 mg/kg is what my vets recommended.

Weighed empty 6cc (ml) syringe

Filled with Panacur 10% paste and weighed. Difference is 6 grams, so 6 grams = 6cc's (ml)

Yesterday and today I brought some feed mixed with warm water and the Safeguard. I put in extra, as it looks like it is ok if they get some extra, and I made sure they all ate it--nobody got left out. So far, so good. I am making a little progress with my birds. Monkey let me pet her a bit today. Her crop feels fine, but I can feel her breastbone, she is pretty skinny. They are all roosting and acting healthy though, so hopefully everything is working so far. Ginger let me pet her a bit but not as much as monkey. Spot will not come near me, but to be honest, she never really has been a bird that likes to interact with people. Coach, my rooster, let me pet his back a little, but that is as close as I could get.
Once they ate the warm medicated food, I brought their regular feed in. I think I am going to mix some cayenne pepper in the food. But now I need to find a way to give them the metronidazone.

So, I gave the remaining 4 chickens Safeguard for 3 days. They have also been on the Amprolium.
I brought in some poo for the vet to do another fecal test ( because I am paranoid and don't want to lose any more birds) and she said that the worm count is way down and I should do another round of Safeguard again in about 3 weeks and that should take care of it. I asked about the Blackhead and she said that I do not need to treat with Fish Zole because the protozoa are from the worms and when we kill the worms and the eggs, the Blackhead will be gone. Is this true? Or do I need to use the FishZole that I picked up for 5 days like I have been reading? I realize, that either way i need to treat with another round of Safeguard.

most likely my final post on this. I started the last dose of worming today using Safeguard. My 4 birds seem to be doing fine. They are skinny, but should hopefully start putting on weight after this dose of the Safeguard. I even started getting little pullet eggs. Yesterday we got one from either Ginger or Spot--not sure which. And today we got one that I think is from Monkey, she is the Welsummer in my avatar picture. It is darker and has some speckles. Hopefully we will have a very uneventful winter! Thank you for your help everyone!

Sorry I missed this... The wormer will kill the cecal worm, true, but it will not kill the protozoa histomonas meleagridis.
