Self-Blue Cochin Bantams

Mr. Ree :

Tom,
I was kinda curious, I want to get a pair (or more) of SB's because I love the color. But I want to introduce the Frizzle gene into them, so I would have to cross them over Black Frizzles to do that. You had mentioned you wouldnt sale any of the birds you raised if they didnt turn out how you wanted. I was just curious if you would be willing to sale a pair or whatever one could get, even if they werent to standard? I was also wondering, you mentioned the birds feathers are a bit stringy in the cushion, would the introduction of the frizzle gene hender or better that aspect of the birds, or would you even have an idea? Just wanted to get your input on the matter, any info is very much appreciated. And the birds you have seem to be coming along very well. Maybe not very quickly, but then again, Rome wasnt built in a day.

Edit: Spell check,...heehee.

Hey Casey.

You could go Black Frizzle X Self-Blue, or Self-Blue X Black Frizzle. Which ever way you wanted. As far as the feather quality. Ultimately you want the frizzle feathers to be as wide as you can get. It makes for a better looking frizzle. I frizzled stringy feather would still show up as poor feather quality. I am hoping that the couple doses of Black will help out with the feather quality and I have an f2 Self-Blue hen that has fantastic feather quality, she's just not as good in the type department as the hen in the photo. From what I've discussed with other folks working Self-Blue in different breeds the stringy feathers are inherent to the Self-Blues and we'll just have to keep selecting away from it.
Most likely I'll have some birds I'll let go this fall.

Thanks Tom. My plan is to get at least a pair or trio, if possible and find the best Black Frizzle pair I can find. I thought of contacting Sheryl Butler about her frizzles as she seems to have the best in the country. And if I could do that I was wanting to breed one SB pullet over the frizzle male and the frizzle female over the SB male and the other SB pullet over the SB male. That way it would give me a bit of diversity within that color geneatically. Just want to get things sorted out and planned ahead so I wont be trying to figure anything out last minute. Also, I was wondering, I know all the f1's will be Black, and those in turn produse %25 SB when crossed, but what if you breed the f1's back over the SB, would that make a greater amount of SB?

The f1s wouls be splits (black carrying the lav gene). Bred to a SB would result in 50% black (splits) and 50% SB.

it would probably be cheaper (in the long run) and ALOT less time consuming to wait a year or 2 and just wait until Tom starts selling his birds and they are cirrculating and just buy a pair of those

My lavender bantam Cochin, Shadow, is our first broody of 2011, it seems. At roost time, rather than go to her special perch that DH made for her, the one she sleeps on every night, she went to a nest and planted herself (she laid her egg this morning so that's not it). When I reached in, she growled at me. When DH reached in, she did a growl-screech sound. I do believe Miss Shadow is broody.
