Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

So far mine have all been shipped eggs. This was the only one I ever actually got to hatch. I usually but an assortment fore each breeder of Lav and BBS, sometimes buff too and the BBS and Buffs always hatch. The lavs usually develop but quit in lockdown. This one hatched but dies this AM. No clue why it was almost a week old and all the BBS are fine. It was fine last night but dead this am.

I have decided to buy only started chicks or adults now and have 3 lavs coming on Friday. I will be trying to hatch every egg I get from them.

Hi All, don't mean to hijack thread or 'cut in' on anyone but would love additional opinions on this chick being lavender. Out of 2 lav splits, and Kal Johnson (Del Co Judge) looked at chick in person and said it is definately a lavender. I, personally want a second opinion, even though it looks lave to me as well and has NO white. I posted pics a couple pages back but didnt get much of a response, I hope that will be diffrent this time

as I've worked hard to get this little toot! Flash went off in last pic, so forgive my ignorance with the cam...lavy chick is in with 2 white chicks. I would deeply appreciate your help, advice, input, anything any of you care to offer. Thanks so much for taking the time and allowing me to post here.

Wonderful vault, great toes! Looks lavender but goes back to where it came from. This what the breeder could share with you or did you hatch it and from what? It's off spring will tell the true story. The one picture looks light but I am going by my lines.

Thank you Bren, I hatched it from my 2 blk splits and was surprised I even had this one as the other 2 are jet black. It's hard to compair pics which I tried to do a few days ago on here, and this baby is just like a lavy d'uccle, just a tad lighter. Feathers on wings are abviously lavender, so

I'm hoping time will tell for sure. Even the fluff is lavy but lighter than new feathers, if that helps any at all. Thank you for responding, I appreciate your time and nice comments.

If the chick came from two blues split for lav, I'd say you'd have to wait and see, as it could be splash. But there's not much else that you can get from two black birds. I myself hatched a surprise lavender just yesterday. The breeder of the roo said that he was split for lav. My hens include a black, not split, that throws grey a lot, a split crossbred that throws smooth feathers more often than not (and never a vault), and a PI hen that I believe to be infertile. Could be that I just quit paying attention to her as a prospective mother, and as soon as I stopped staring at her eggs in the bator, voila!

Purty baby...Yep, mine was a surprise as well. The 2 blacks hatched first, then the pokey toot decided it wanted to view the big 'world of bator' too

I just wish I had either more eggs or chciks to raise with this one because I have no outside lines to breed it to, if it makes cull-cut at age. Related to the blacks plus parents are ummmm, it's parents soooo <shrugging shoulders>

I have heard that some hatch out striped and some don't. IDK why!

So back to the reason on why lavenders don't hatch as well. My friend and I were thinking about this and we came up with an idea. Is it possible that they have hard time hatching because they are so interbred. When people are trying to get lavenders they will breed a pair lets say a Black Hen and Lavender Roo. Then they have a bunch of split babies that they can breed together or breed back to their dad to get more Lavenders then once they get Lavenders they will breed them back again to siblings and parents. Therefore they would be interbred. Maybe causing an issue. What do all you people think. Plus majority of Lavenders come from Deb and Bren so really the only new blood is from other colors to make splits.

My few are all muted chipmunk stripes as well. I'm getting them one or two at a time, from a full nb lav roo and one lav one black/lav split hen; a full bearded lav roo and two lav split hens; and from a lav/black split SG roo and two lav/black split hens. The first SG I was "sure" was a lav because it was a solid self blue at hatch and from the lav/black split SG rooand the two lav/black split hens has turned out to be a blue, as have its siblings. I don't really understand that, but it is what has happened. I also have three from these mixes that hatched cream and are beginning to feather out white. That is another puzzle. It isn't possible for any other birds to be in that mix, as ONLY my lavs/lav splits are in that area. I think I'm getting nothing live from the lav/lav pairs. However, I've mixed the eggs that I've incubated and haven't always gotten them labeled. I know some of the lav/lavs were developing, but they died before hatching.

The lavs are all still quite young, as are most of the splits, so I expect to get more lavs as time goes by. I plan to put the two quite young nb lav pullets with the known fertile young lav roo.

My first lav/black split hens are from a lav roo from Deb several years ago. I bought another two years ago from Bren, and crossed him with black hens from a couple of other breeders.
