You do get much stronger embryos/chicks when you breed the Lavs to black/lav splits. My first two hatches out of my Lav pen this year have been very good. The chicks are strong & didn't appear to have any difficulty hatching....
Can someone find me a good black hen and rooster then? Must be old enough to breed. These are beautiful birds and I want some babies from them sooner rather than later.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Do you think it's fertile? Here's hoping for lots more! My lavender cockerel from them is still young and hasn't figured out what to do yet. I've got hens in the pen with him that will squat if I just speak to them, HA! I can't even pet them without them imitating a pancake on a tripod!

45% is way too low on humidity. What do you mean by "periodic checks"? Do you toss the eggs, assuming the embryo is dead? Open them to check? Better to leave an uncertain egg than to toss one. Just in case. I agree with adding vitamins to the breeders--both parents.
The eggs are definitely dead. They go from a
full look as the embryo fills the egg to what appears to be decomposition inside the shell. The first one I left in 2 days after the scheduled hatch and yep, nothing.
What should the humidity level be? This is what the hovabator 1588 is set for during the incubation phase and then you bump it up (fill the other tray) to 70% during lockdown. Never a problem with that in the past with any other egg. Have ameraucanas hatching today.
Periodic checks= when I have to fill the water tray I'll shine a flashlight down from the top of the egg while it's sitting in the turner. If it looks full it's ok, but what happens is the dead ones sort of blob up so there's a lot of clear white space w/floating stuff around the blob. It went from looking like a healthy egg to lots if floating gunk inside and no more bloodvessels anywhere.
