Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

I personally would not breed him to blue hens, you might have trouble telling which ones are actually lavenders.

X 2!!!

I am breeding for my own purposes here so I am not to worried about telling them apart as chicks as long as I can tell when they get some age to them. In the meantime of getting everyone broke back into seperate pens, I am going to be looking for 2 or 3 black pullets/hens of good quality. Locally not easy to achieve cause most of what is for sale is not good enough and what I do want is not for sale! If anyone has any black or black/lav split pullets or hens for sale and are close enough to be picked up I would be ever so greatful! Pretty much within the state of ohio or down to lexington or maybe a little farther than that even. I would like to have 3 or 4 more blacks.

I am very very new to silkies but have fallen in total love with them and am in the process of hatching some that I purchased on the BYC auction. I am getting more interested in showing and really wanting to KNOW the breed. Is there a good book or website that can help me with the standards? I have been reading on this BYC site and on the others so I feel comfortable enough to raise some silkies but I want quality. Any suggestions?
Thanks
Rita

Joining ASBC will give you access to accurate information about how and what to breed. Things like breeding blue to lavender is beginning to cause a ton of problems for people buying what they think are lavenders and turn out to be blues. Some faults that are easy to fix and how. And a ton easier to find than reading through several hundred pages trying to find an answer.

How is the summer treating everyone's lavenders?

Ours seem to be handling the heat better than some of our other varieties.

After brooding for a while... we are laying again! Hurray!

Could somebody please tell me, or post pics of the color variations your having with your Lav chicks please. (faint striping, darker or lighter lav color?) Thanks so much!

ETA: Also the splits....should they be 100% pure black looking or do they vary in shade a little bit from dark blue-black?

Sounds like they are split to blue, not to black.

If a lav is breed with a blk how would they be spilt to blue?
