Hello. Here's my new lavender "Eleanor". She's 20 weeks and about the same size as my 7 week old standard chicks. She really rules the roost at this point. It is so cute. She shows the chicks what to do and they like to follow her around.

That actually brings me to my next question....I am doing black to black (all pure non-split matings) this winter, but also want to continue my lav splits. I was thinking to distinguish the chicks I would have to incubators running with black eggs in one, and lav splits in the other. Since I would like to brood them all together, I was thinking of toe punching the splits straight out of the bator, that way even if they loose a band later on I will always be able to tell a split from my blacks. Will you be able to see a toe punch when feathers come in? Has anyone done this with their silkies?

I was thinking of coding like this (with the punches being on the inside toes with less feathering to cover them)

Lav/Split Pen 1 - \\ l / \\.l / - then later these would be banded in blue
Lav/Split Pen 2- \\ l./ \\ l / - later banded in pink
Black (non-split)- \\ l / \\ l / - later banded in red

Note- I do not have any possible splits, only pure blacks or deff splits. I am only breeding lav to split, or black to black

I tend to think silkies with that swept back ELVIS look in their crests are males. Time will tell.

Thanks for the feedback. What age should I see a lot of comb and wattle development if it is a boy?

Silkies in general can mature very slowly. You may or may not see waddles even ever so slightly if it is a male...I have them in all sizes. Just give it time and look for a more spiked look in his crest as it forms streamers or...wait for the egg or the CROW. Sorry I am no more help than that.
