Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

Well today has been a rough day. All of the lavender hatching eggs I bought didn't develop at all in my inc or my friend's cabinet incubator. I'm guessing they were shook up badly at the post office. To top it all off, the PO delayed shipping a box of beautiful splash chicks an extra day at the breeder's airport and they all arrived dead. I also had some Buff chicks arriving today in which they did the same thing-- holding the box at breeder's local airport. I sat all day on the phone with USPS begging them to let me pick up the chicks tonight as soon as the plane arrives. I just don't want anymore chicks to suffer. *sigh*

Brody's Broodello :

We almost had a huge setback on the Lav front. I came home today, went into the barn to water the birds. We have a row of 4 cages next to each other. I was checking on the SLW's that are next to the young Lavs from Brenda, next to them a White Dotte Cocck, then the other pair of Lavs from Bren. Well I'm taking care of the SLW and look over to the cage between the Lavs, and the White Dotte's feet are in the air. Now I saw him last night, he was lookin good, and actually thought that he should have been entered to the show this weekend. I'm, like what! He was doing great, and the other birds are Hot & panting, but not enough to die! Then I see IT!!!!! The head & neck of the Dotte is INSIDE a five foot Black Snake! He was wrapped up under the bird! Well I called hubby, who was on the way home, got a flat backed shovel and waited, That thing wasn't going anywhere. Well he decided to let go and try to crawl to the NEXT pen-THE ONE WITH MY LAVS FROM BRENDA!!!! I DON"T THINK SO!!! The birds were piled into a corner scared. As he went through the wire, I got the shovel and pinned it behind the head. I got Brody to grab the Silkies and put them into another cage. I stood there holding the shovel for 20 minutes until Hubby got there. Then he quickly got that thing & chopped it's head OFF!!! He was also saying NO when I told him to KILL the black snakes when we found them. He was like, they are good, they kill rats, I'd rather have a snake than rats! Well after seeing his White Dotte that we had to drive to The Ohio National to pick up from a Master breeder from Oklahoma. He has changed his tune. I told him that if that thing had made a meal of one of the Lavs, well there would have been NO living with me this weekend, and that I would have been the biggest B!+c# that the world has ever seen this weekend! hate to say it, but better his bird than mine, for him to see the light!

You do realize that rats will also eat chicks?

If there are that many snakes where you live, you need to use wire with smaller openings, and plug whatever openings they can get through into your coops and barn.

I am sorry for your loss

We're now making the fronts and doors of all our coops with 1/2" hardware cloth, and making all our cages of the same. I killed a 2' copperhead in the guinea pen--open doors--yesterday. They're beautiful and eat mice and such, but snakes of any kind in the pens or coops don't survive!

I really didn't need to hear all of this..... I just moved all my lavenders outside and have been stressed over it for days!!!!! We have problem with rats they have gotten atleast 6 of our birds this year. We make sure we are home or the birds are put in before dark. I hate having my silkies in cages off the ground but I think I may have to do it. I know if something happens to my birds it will be the lavenders!!!!!
