Black is about as neutral a colour as there is. Since lavender had to be introduced from a different breed, crossing back to high quality blacks helped bring correct type and other silkie traits back to the birds. I can see how a bird with insufficient melanizers to cover hackes might benefit from a new dose of them by breeding to a solid black bird. I agree that Bren and Deb have more knowledge and experience with lavender silkies than anyone. George also has a lot of knowledge and experience wirh lavenders, but sadly he is not breeding anymore
Bren and Deb have both been seriously working on lavender for years; most of the other folks who have them have only had them for a fairly short while.
