Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

I told her that I had sent pictures of these lavender chicks to people that no what a lav is supposed to look like
and she this:

send some pictures of the chicks also and there is only two breeders of lav that I know of that would know anything about them


Oh I sent her pictures and I am waiting again to see what she has to say!!
When she sent them she told me to make sure and band them so i would no who was dark and who was light because when they got older they would all even out in color and i wouldnt no who was who becasue i should breed the dark ones to the light ones and the light ones to the dark ones?????

She just sent me a bunch of pictures of her "lavenders" and said see how they vary. I have seen Bren and Debs and her pics she jsut sent me look nothing like lavs!! they look like washed out splash and funny white and splotchy blues.
What should I tell her about the crazy color of these pictures of her birds she just sent me??

I have a question about silkies,when they are chicks do they have the blue ears or is that something that comes with age?

Elite is correct in that the color will not even out. Further, if those are not from the true lavender line on one side, they aren't even lavender splits. They are very nice-looking birds, however. You could establish a very nice splash line with them.

Bren and Deb are the truely knowledgeable lavender breeders. I've been to Bren's several times in the past five years, have seen a large number of her lavender birds in several different generations, and have had lav roos from her and Deb for several years. I now have 7 full lavenders from them, as well as several black/lav splits from them. Their lavs are all evenly colored. Sometimes when the roos mature, there will be a very thin outlining of the hackle feathers in a little darker color, but they are not splashed. Elite and my lavenders are all from Bren and Deb's stock. There are others out there who have true lavenders, but they originated with Bren/Deb's birds.

The black/lav splits are BLACK. Lavender split with something else generally produces a "mutt," and those often mature out as grays (silver partridge). I've some that are fairly nice grays. Some, however, have some sort of buffish brown in them, usually in the primary wing feathers.

I bought a "Lavender" pullet from one of the other breeders, whom I believe to be genuine in his belief his are lavenders. I knew she was a splash (and said I thought so), but she was a nice bird and I'd traveled a ways for her, so I bought her anyway. I'll not use her in my lavender line. His line came from another reputable breeder, who also believes his birds are lavenders. I don't think either of them had/have any intention of misleading anyone, they are just mistaken. I have noticed neither has shown a lavender in the last couple of shows I've attended that they were also involved in.
