I have splash from a breeder and when I get baby chicks they look just like lavender. Now everyone that sees these chicks wants them, thinking they are lavender and I know they are not. When they get a little older they get there splash. Just because they look lavender as chicks does not mean there lavender. If you have lavender you know you have lavender. Make sure you get your lavender from a good breeder that knows what they are doing. It will save you a lot a time and money.

DITTO! I have said it over and over. This year I have been hatching some splash and trust me....it is near impossible at a certain point. When they hatch of course I can tell but a few weeks, month or so, they do look very lavender. Give them a few more weeks and you see the dark splotches as the splash displays. I should take some pictures side by side at different stages.

Even I think I shouldn't have done this. I was believing it would be so easy to watch them but even for me you have to take a double take. I am not crossing but talking two different varieties. I can only imagine the mess when they are a lavender split to blue or splash.

There lies the problem.

Please critique the color of the juveniles below. Pics taken today 7/17/10. I have attempted to be certain that the actual color is represented (at least on my monitor).

Well she says they are lavs but do I trust what she says????

None of those chicks appears to be lavender. They could be crossed BUT that dark area in the primary feathers is more than likely splash. The others look blue to me. Lavenders....they just don't look like that if they are pure. Are all these chicks related? Are they from the same breeder? That could explain the twins. LOL

When I say lizards...that is a term we use to describe the chicks that hatch with lesser feather down at hatch. They always have darker beaks, eyes, skin and beautiful dark combs. That chick reminds me of one of my lizards with that very dark looking beak.

EVEN though all have a black base now I still get the two looks. Remember Deb and Donnie started with Deb's white silkies. These are the 2009 chicks and I never got to the ones from this year. I lost my web builder and need to update bad. For now I prefer the darker, non striped chicks but still keep both. The darker are the "lizards" with the retarded feathering. They catch up fast and you really never know the difference other than the DARK skin, beaks and combs. I can just look at the adults and know which is which. Time will tell us if we lean towards one or the other.

I would guess the ones with stripes are e^b based and the ones without are E based.
