So, Bren, when we enter them at Shawnee, do we list them as lavender or self blue?

My lav babes look like the muted "chipmunk" one shown (no brown). My darker, brighter chipmunks that are lav splits end up beautiful grays (silver partridge). I have several dark "chipmunks" from my porcelain project (their mother is a silver white) that turned out to be beautiful, beautiful blue partridges, and blues.

I hate to keep hammering on this subject but don't know where else to ask.

And I KNOW there are folks here who are expert and can help.

The bright colored chipmunk colored chicks are liable to be either Lav colored or Lav splits is that correct?
If they are blue or silver partridge or some color like that...are they still OK to use in breeding program?
I thought blues and gray were not to be used if it could be helped.
Bottom line is the appearance of chipmunk chicks undesirable?
Is there anyone out there willing to help me with this, that will please PM me so I can pick your brain a little?
I'd sure appreciate it.

I too am a bit confused. So the chipmunks chicks are not preferable? Should we be only using lavs chicks that hatch out clear?

Also, I have seen many shades of Lavender. Should we be striving for the clear light lavenders? What about the Steely colored ones? I have two hens are steeley lavender and then a lighter more solid roo who has some darker tints in his hackles like many of the self blue OEGB roos I see. I have not been getting eggs yet so don't know what I will get from this trio, but does it sound like I am off to an ok start? I will try to post some pics later of them.

I would love to breed them correctly but am a bit confused! Any help with would be much appreciated!

personally I like the steely rich lav color (does not at all look like blue) over the washed out lighter color and have been working hard to make my color as rich a lav as possible but since I dont show and only breed for pleasure I feel as though I can do what I want lol

I saw you bid on my eggs so I wanted to mention that incase you wanted the lighter lavs for showing.

My question is, if they are not recognized yet as a standard breed color, why are we trying to get the light lav to be the standard, shouldnt we try to get the nicer color that looks more like the actual color lavender? I am not trying to be rude just curious I know very little if anything about why standards are what they are and why some colors are what they are.

Thanks for the heads up on your eggs! My two hens are steeley and I love that color! I just wasn't sure which was preffered as a whole.

Also, does there seem to be a theme with the chipmunks? Like do the chipmunk chicks turn our steely and the solid lavs stay solid???

Since I'm a very small scale breeder it is a very big deal to me to know which birds to keep.
I only set 12 eggs and 11 eggs were good, 10 hatched. [The hens were either Black or Lav that the eggs are from ]
4 of them are the dark chipmunk I showed pics of and two are the Lavender striped. One other is real light and three appear a shade of Blue.
I'd really like to know as early as possible which ones that I need to keep. Considering that they be correct in all other ways.
And what color they might turn out to be ?
I do have a pure Lav roo that I can use on any splits. He is young, so the roo that is the daddy to these chicks is a Black/split Lav .
I guess my question is...if they are chipmunk colored does that mean they ARE carrying the Lav gene?
And/or does it mean they will become Lavender color with age?
Thanks for all replies,
Cheryl

Here are the two light colored "chipmunks" I assume they are Lavender????

I don't really see that yellow that appears on the photo. At least not that much!
Their Mom is probably the hen in my avatar
Just thought I show you what I was talking about.
Thanks for looking
