Self Blue (Lavender) Silkie Thread

ok, well work load is different. But all the confusion that can go on here, wasn't sure if you were selling because of that. And giving up:)

I want to keep my BBS and White silkies but I feel with lavenders its like 3 varieties and keeping them all separate! To much work, I only have two houses so i'd need to build a third one! So its the blue and splash or the lavenders.

All that plus 2 breeds of ducks, Rosecombs, Cochins, and 2 breeds of rabbits totaling like 45 rabbits, 2 horses and 2 dogs. Not to mention I have 4-H and I want a life!

I dont mean to crash the thread everyone, but need some genetic advice/info from Sonoran, Bren or anyone else who might be able to help me out here.
I did some trading this time last year and received chicks from a fellow BYC'r that are white (visually). I was told they were lavender splits, so I kept them all in the same pen. Now they are laying and one of the first eggs hatched was indeed a lav chick!?! My question is tho, since white 'masks' (forgive me if thats the wrong term) other colors or hides, would this/these chicks be worth breeding together to get more lavs, and when bred to lavs will they breed true? I hope I'm not confusing everyone, it's just that WHITE has/does/acts so much differently than other colors, and I'm trying to get the genetics down pat while working with these white birds & carriers.

Second question is, buff and blue make porc or isab, correct? I have a blue roo from Bobbi who is stunning (so are his babies) that I'd like to use for this program specifically. I also have some of these colors already from another BYC'r who graciously sold/shipped to me by private sale. Would I get porc/isab by using my blue boy to cover some of my buffs? What would 1st gen chicks hatch as? Does this also depend on what each bird carries in hiden genetics, or ??

Thanks so much for any help, this is "square one" on a new breeding project so I need some expert advice before advancing with any final decisions.

PS. I will try to post pics over the weekend as we're finally going to get some sunshine

I think two very important questions to ask privately before buying any stock (eggs or chickens) are:

~ Where did your stock come from?

~ What colors did you use to achieve your results?

Then the questions that you ask of the breeder you are considering buying from should be asked again of the breeder that they got their stock from.

The second question is very important with Lavenders and Isobel Porcelains.

For Lavender birds... if the breeder has used anything other than blacks and lavenders... IT WILL SHOW UP AND CAUSE PROBLEMS LATER.

For Isobel birds... If the breeder has used anything other than buffs and lavenders... YOUR RESULTS WILL NOT BE PREDICTABLE.

(Not capitalizing to yell... just make a clear point

All of that being said... it all depends on what you are wanting to do with your breeding program. Some people WANT to mix their lavenders with BBS or who knows what. This is GREAT! People should have fun with the things that they enjoy. I think we should all just be clear with each other. We should strive to be responsible buyers and sellers! Some people may want less expensive birds and take a longer route to getting their desired results. That should be encouraged and applauded... as long as they are clear about what their goals are. Lavender birds can be rather expensive and when people don't get exactly what they are thinking they are getting it can be upsetting. When you charge a pretty penny (or even a small fee) for a bird I think you have a responsibility to be as forthcoming as possible with your buyer! They should know what they are paying for and it should be worth it!

I would like to encourage lavender silkie breeders to ask these questions of themselves... what ever the answer! Where did your stock came from? What you are breeding currently? What are you goals in your breeding program? This would help us all to organize our thoughts and be able to convey to potential buyers.

Be proud of your stock! Be proud of what your goals are! Get excited about your breeding program! Encourage each other! Breeding chickens can sometimes be a frustrating thing. Let's help each other by taking some of the mystery out of it. Breeding these guys is for the LONG HAUL. Be prepared to work hard for 5 years with little results... DON'T GIVE UP!

Darling Farms wishes you a GREAT DAY!

Personally I would not use white birds in a lav project, just because of what else the white could be masking. But since you already have it going, the lav chicks (presuming they are out of a white) will be carrying a copy of recessive white. Breed two of these chicks together and you will get 25% white out of them, as well as 25% of them carrying a copy of white.

As for the blue/buff question, it's not blue and buff that make isabel porcelain, it's lav and buff.
