It means the bird is visually black but carries the lavender gene. Most people would agree that it's hard to tell which is a split without breeding them to a lavender to see what the pairing produces. I've heard some indicating that there are subtle tells either at birth with the split having lighter marks on their wings or as an adult with splits sometimes having lighter eye color but I remain unconvinced of these methods. Yes, Sigrid Van Dort wrote GENETICS OF CHICKEN COLOURS and SILKIES AND SILKIE BANTAMS. These are both pricey books, but very well worth the money. They are absolutely gorgeous with many, many color pictures as well as her wonderful paintings. Not to mention the wealth of infomation. They were privately printed, but can be obtained here.

Well, my upteenth hatch yesterday...getting so discouraged.

I have a lav roo over pure black hens, but I keep getting blue chicks! Those I'm so sure are lav, end up darkening up to blue.

Besides the color issue...I'm also getting alot of leg/foot problems....chicks seem too large for the egg & have a hard time getting into hatch position. I'm now hatching in a Dickey with temps at 99.5 - 99.9 & humidity at 45% - 50%, then up to 65%.

Any ideas????

Are you absolutely certain they are black hens? A statement made by Sigrid Van Dort is that American blue Silkies can be so dark they are very difficult to differentiate from blacks.

That would also explain the blue chicks if it were splash X black. They sure are pretty though!

It sure doen't look lavender to me either. Now that I have some lavender it is easier to tell (for me anyway) That looks alot like the ones I had that were suppossed to be Lav and were not. It can be a mess!!!!! And heart breaking.
