Trick there is that mostly I cook like my grands and great grands... some of this, cuppa that, scoop of this. Tried for YEARS to get recipes from them and they just do not exist. Drove me BANANAS, but now I find myself doing the same thing.

Like the marinade for the kebabs we had tonight... some oil, some honey, some soy sauce, some minced garlic... in you go.

When it comes to canning and baking I'm more specific, use cookbooks, but stews, soups, etc... it's toss and go. May look up a recipe, just to get an idea of what's usually in there... but don't really stick to it.

Impossible to duplicate exactly... which when you find one you love is a pain, but when you're serving the same thing for several meals it's nice.

Just remember it's YOUR kitchen, YOU'RE in charge and you can do what you want... give yourself some flexibility (again, soups, casseroles, etc) and find what works for you and yours. Cut the garlic, double the onion, dice the carrots... do what suits you and yours.

I've got cookbooks out the wazoo though... some old, some new... gifts, yard sales... all sorts. If there's a recipe you're looking for in particular I can give it a looksie.

My "signature dish"... or at least the one everyone clamors for me to make for every get together is the mashed potatoes. Wouldn't think that's anything scary... I add some chopped/minced onion and garlic in with the tators and cook as usual... use real butter... milk... add a pinch of cheese (cheddar or colby) when I have some and I don't have to bother with gravy... enough flavor on their own. Since I suck at gravies this is a major bonus.

walmart took the sewing and material out of the store here in west tenn

That's terrible. I always check out their $1. a yard table. Since I make Renaissance clothes, if there's anything tapestry looking, plain colored cotten or linens (especially white), I buy the whole bolt.

hi! my kitchen is medium sized but inefficient, I hope for better one day! I am lucky enough to have a large cold storage room, we call it the pump house because the well pump is in there. But I do think storage is all around any home, under beds, in crawl spaces etc. I do have an extra frig in the pump house and an upright freezer too. I used to have a chest freezer and it seemed to hold more but the upright is soooo convenient.
I know it's hard to get started planning ahead, but try this pick just one day a week and assign it a main ingredient for dinner (chicken perhaps) then write down your 7 favorite recipes for chicken and make them for the next 7 weeks . . .

you're so funny, no guru here, prettymuch still a newbie I think! Does my family have any what? Chickens? If that's the question lol, then yes! We have about 150 birds, both meat and layers. Just click on my name and them click on topics and you can find my posts about both.

didn't read all 7 pages, but have to say my favorite cooking magazine is "Taste of Home". I bought their cookbook for myself and my 27 yo daughter. I also subscribe to their magazine and bought subscriptions for my dd, and 2 nieces. I started a large binder with sections and cut the recipes I like out and put them in my binder for easier reference.

I usually make a dinner menu for the whole month. Saves money on the grocery bill and we eat healthier.

I live in Northern Nevada with very poor soil - I started a compost pile and hope to have a much better crop of veggies. Check with some of your local nurseries - ours offer free classes all the time.

i must been doing it along but been having my staples[ buying them on sale monthly] on hand all the time.
I know that i have pasta, 2 night fish, soup\\[stews] 2 night left over and pizza or subs or veggie rice dish
but don't buy all of meat for monthy except for ground chuck or ground roast when it is on sale. i make meatloaves and meat balls and divide the meat into 1/2 lb and freeze it.
it not on a set day of the week. i decide what have for supper that night.

now the stores need to put there milk on sale hehe
they have sale on everything else?
