Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes

Hi Lisa. Somewhat belatedly I've found this thread and I'm with you on the oregano oil. Apparently it is also good for internal parasites. When I first discovered it I was advised to take a couple of drops in olive oil not water, as the oil prevents it burning.

I love Dawn too and use it on everything - counters, appliances, walls, hands. I discovered its degreasing ability while working at my vet's office in the boarding kennels. They use it to scrub down the dog kennels because it gets rid of that "dog grease". I put a squirt in the washer whenever I wash my dog's blankets too. It works great!

I started making mine a couple months ago after I ran across this thread and thought the same thing - it's not going to smell good - but it actually does! It smells "clean". I like the smell better than most of the laundry soap I buy at the store.

I did try the fabric softner recipe I found here too and decided it wasn't worth the time and effort, plus I really didn't like the way it worked.

Woo Hoo, my daughter, who lives in Ozark, MO, went to a store in Springfield and found me the Mule Team and the Arm and Hammer washing soda. She didn't find the bar of soap but I will search for that. She got me two boxes of each. While in line the cashier said, "you must be making laundry soap?" The lady standing in line behind my daughter said, "really? You can make your own? Will you tell me how?" Daughter said, "do you want my mom's email? I have no idea how to make it."

NO, she didn't give my email out.

I figured that since the cashier knew the ingredients that they must have had the bar soap, but since she was nice enough to find the other two, I am not complaining and will find it myself. One box was 4.25 and the other was 2 something. So they were very cheap. I can't wait to find the Fels-Napha soap!!

I've been using the homemade laundry soap for a few months now and we just love it! Shared some with my MIL in Washington and she's thrilled with it. She's been all over up there looking for the ingredients. I couldn't find the FelsNaptha so I've been using ZOTE bar soap which I found in the laundry detergent section of our local Target. It cuts easily into chunks. Then I just grind it in batches with the washing soda and borax. Smells awesome! We have a front loader washer and (before trying the homemade stuff) my husband and I were noticing that even just washed laundry was smelling moldy. And all the ingredients are safe for our septic system. I have more samples ready to send to my mom in Georgia and my best friend in SoCal.

For any who haven't tried it yet, you really should!

could you please clarify...

do you "cook" it or do you just grind it up as you need it and use it dry? I, too, have front loader and was looking forwarding to using this homemade version. I will look at Target for the Zote. thanks

No cooking. No water. Grind it together dry and use it dry. I use approximately a tablespoon per load, a bit more if I'm doing extra dirty laundry. I grind several batches and then don't have to think about making more for a few months.

thank you we have a dollar store closer to us than Target so I will check tomorrow.

I love the idea of making up the dry detergent! I will also look for some Ivory with Lavender
