Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes

Congrats to all of you who have already found and used oil of oregano! It truly is a wonder, but you're right, it can be hard for some ppl to take. Thanks for offereing alternative suggestions for taking it:>) I have gotten used to it over the years and it doesn't bother me.

Here are a couple more remedies I forgot.

Heartburn...1 tbsp white vinegar in about 1/4 cup of water. Swallow down. It will go away in seconds. (I know I know it sounds like an acid will make it worse, but vinegar is actually a stomach acid nutralizer and will level off the PH.

Now for more serious heartburn ( like acid reflux) go to your grocery store and get yourself some fresh ginger root in the produce section. All you need is a peice the size of the tip of your finger every day. It will eventually cure acid reflux for good. Take the outside skin off it, Chew it with some water until it is well chewed and swallow. This is hot at first but will bring almost instant relief

This is a combination of Alton Brown's and my Mom's recipes; DH said they are the best Bread and Butters he's ever had.

They are sure easy enough; the only problem is that they don't last nearly long enough.

It is a 30 minute drive to the nearest grocery store so we keep an extra frig in the garage for extra gallons of milk, butter and so on so I don't have any problem with refrigerated storage space. I've never tried water bathing these for shelf-storage but I don't see why anyone couldn't do that. Of course you would need to use mason jars instead.

Needed: Home remedy for leg cramps

My DH had cramps so bad he was hoping out of bed every 10 min last night. I made him drink pickle juice but I don't want him drinking it all, I use it to pickle my eggs, lol.

This isn't exactly a "home remedy" but I've found that magnesium supplements prevent me from getting leg cramps. I've read that you shouldn't take them after 5pm though because they can disturb your sleep.

He can also add bananas to his diet, they help with leg cramps...and drink lots of water...it is great for your muscles.
ACV (apple cider vinegar)... I would have never thought of for leg cramps, nccountrygirl, but it makes perfect sense!

My DH gets leg cramps and he says that eating a couple of bananas works for him. It’s his theory that it’s a potassium deficiency that causes the leg cramps. He works outside and sweats a lot and so looses a lot of potassium; bananas have a lot of potassium in them.

Gatorade is good for that as well but DH won’t touch the stuff; he says if tastes like horse pee. How he would know that I don’t know and don’t want to ask.
