Self-sufficient households; help!

Ok so I am confused. I'm sorry ninjapoodles, but is the charlies powder cheaper or the homemade?

NO. That's why I said "not as cheap as homemade" above.

I've made the homemade laundry soap before (out of my own cold-process soap), and by the time I gathered all the ingredients, got it made, tried it, and saw the results, I just wasn't overly thrilled with it. Others probably make it much better. But for me, Charlie's is the perfect solution. It's only when you buy in bulk, like the 5-gallon bucket (which, at one tablespoon per load, would last you forever). that your cost gets down to about 10.4 cents per large washload, which is still more than some people can make the homemade stuff for.

If you gather up all the ingredients, and you have "washing soda," be sure and Google all the many uses of that miracle substance! It can do TONS of stuff!

Wow! You startled me there in the 2nd sentence! I know that would help save water and toilet paper, but I was trying to figure out how we would all do healthwise

There is a strong movement among lots of the blogs I read in which people have given up toilet paper. They're using cloth wipes, just like they do with their cloth-diapered babies. Also, there is currently a "golden shower for your garden" campaign going on, encouraging people to save their urine for the free nitrogen. If you look at it totally without emotion, it does make sense. It's free nitrogen, after all, and sterile if it's coming from a healthy person. I think the measurement I saw was a 10:1 parts water:aged urine dilution, then you pour it just on the base of the plants.

One of the green bloggers who is promoting this came up with the slogan, "**** On Monsanto!", a reference to the largest supplier of chemical fertilizer.

hmmm..... just trying to imagine what my customers who buy veggie shares would say... What a concept! Whenever I think I've seen and done it all, something else pops out that I've never considered! Just think--all these years I've been trying to get my son to pee inside--what a waste of fertilizer

lol you guys are cracking me up! I don't know that I could save my urine either at this point....

Sorry ninja poodles that does seem like a stupid question! I asked it b/c initially when you posted about the charlies powder, I thought you had said that it was cheaper. I think I need to go to bed now lol!! Sorry for the confusion!!

Morning,

I do believe that the world is making a turn-a-round and going back to the "old ways" particularly in the United Kingdom, at last people are starting to grow their own vegetables and have backyard chickens, and the old fashioned English Garden is making a huge comeback (I have always been old fashioned!) I am so glad at last people are realising that you can save a lot of money by growing your own food as much as possible and working the land no matter how small your piece of land may be.......and its great that urban school children are becoming aware that eggs come from hens, milk comes from cows and not the local supermarket, its good to see and good for the environment..... being self reliant is good for us all, and our wallets

Please don't dispose of the wipes in the toilet! My DS and DIL were doing this and it caused a clog in the plumbing which flooded their family room (split-level) and ruined the carpet. Just a warning!

wildsky,

I hear you I never liked the idea of wipes either. good old fashioned warm water.
DD was born 26 yrs ago and if they had wipes I never knew it. But at my baby shower I got a bunch of those little ultra soft baby facecloths.

I don't know what the big deal with the wipes are ,I know they are convenient when your out and about but I'd rather not use them for grandbaby when we are home.

Yep - nothing like good old plain water... I never had a baby poop I couldn't clean off with water.

I used to take them out as well, not often, but I was using cloth diapers anyway - so had to lug the dirty stuff home anyway.
