Self-sufficient households; help!

Nuggetsowner:) :

I am also having a difficult time finding the Fels Naptha and the Washing Soda. I was at three different stores today including Wal-Mart (I hate that store! Even worse on Sundays!). Good thing I had to get things at all three anyway! I will try our local hardware store tomorrow. Someone suggested a smaller stor might have it. I never thought of looking at the Dollar Store. I will maybe try there tomorrow too. It is on the way to the other store anyway. If not I will try the website you all listed. Thanks for such helpful household tips and please keep them coming everyone!

If you cannot find Fels Naptha, don't woryy youself, you can use ZOTE soap which is found at Dollar General on the Spanish Isle. Also when I cannot find Washing Soda I pick up the big blue $3 box of Purex Dry Detergent from Dollar General and it works great also. Just thought I would let you know what you can do if you cannot find what you need.

Note: Zote soap gives it a much better scent, to me does anyways. But you can actually use any soap. But with the Zote you can get 3 uses out of 1 bar.

Hi Again...I haven't been on this thread for a while...glad you are all liking the soap recipe! Yes the dry soap recipe is low sudsing and I have been using it in my front load washer for about 7 years or more now.

I tried it, and it's fantastic... I've used about 4 tbsp for our dog loads, which are usually dog beds and towels used in the welping box.. and 2 tbsp for human junk, it smells incredible, and looks great too on the shelf.

Dangerous Chicken Thank you for sharing your blog with me.

I found the color safe bleach at the $ store. The Borax was at Walmart and The other things were at my local groc store.

I got home mixed it up and then noticed that when I grabed the color safe bleach at the $ store I actually grabbed the detergent instead LOL my daughter snatched that up. I will be picking up my color safe beach in the morning and trying this in my laundry tomorrow. Trust me when I tell ya I was so sad I had to wait to do laundry (NOT).

Thanks again for all the help and tips.

Yay Zookeeper, glad to share

I just know your laundry soap will turn out as good as mine. I really love that stuff!

I wanted to add that I was at FRED MEYER today, and they had all three laundry gel ingredients lined up together! Borax, Arm & Hammer Washing Soda, & Fels Naptha all in a row! Someone must have hipped them to the recipe

So those of you with a Fred Meyer near by, you may have a chance to get it all at one place!

I've used the dry laundry detergent 4 or 5 times now and it seems to be working great! I'm one of those people who likes to see suds, so I have to get used to the low-sudsing feature. That's one of the reasons I've always used Tide. But it is getting the clothes clean and they smell wonderful! I'm definitely sold. DH was amazed at the savings aspect! I'm going to make some for my daughter, too. With 3 kids, they go through detergent like it's water.

It's great to hear the wonderful reviews of the homemade detergent. For those of you who have made both the dry mix and the liquid mix, what are your thoughts on each? Does one work better than the other? How about the sudsing between the two?

BB I have not made the dry detergent, I only make the liquid, but both of them are low sudsing and in the long run this will help prolong the life of your washer.
