Self-sufficient households; help!

I bought my sunlight bars for .99 for two, they came in a two pack..

I will tell you that I have just used the Borax alone when I couldn't find the washing soda, just doubled the amount. They are both laundry boosters and perform about the same action. My liquid detergent basically came out the same way, with or without the A&H washing soda! If you have to pay a big price online, it defeats the purpose of making it in the first place!

P.S. Just about any True Value has the FN soap. We have tried the Zote and Calgon and it just wasn't as good, nor did it smell as good.

For those who want to save money and be more "green," but don't want to make their own, I feel like I have to plug Charlie's Laundry Powder . It's amazing stuff. Comes in a little brown paper bag, and you use ONE TABLESPOON per load. A tiny little $11 bag washes 80 loads of laundry, and leaves no residues. You don't even have to use fabric softeners when you use Charlie's. I LOVE the stuff.

OH, and Charlie's offers free shipping.

Nuggetsowner:) :

I found the fels naptha for only .99 a bar. I was soooo happy but then realized I would have to buy the washing soda online. Can someone please tell me what the difference between baking soda and washing soda is. I mean chemical difference. On the baking soda it says you can add it to the laundry and use it to balance the ph in your water so I am wondering what is different with the washing soda.

Baking soda-- the Arm and Hammer stuff in the orange box that you can stick in your refrigerator to absorb odors. Sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3.

Washing soda -- Also sold by Arm and Hammer. Sodium carbonate, Na2CO3,

You took the words outta my mouth. Also ask about the Washing Soda. Most stores will stock it for you but you have to ask, with a nice smile, of course.

I was wondering if I could use it (baking soda).....

Is there a section here on BYC for these types of topics/recipes?? Boy that would be great as a reference. I'm writing all these down and putting them in a notebook, lol...yeah, I'm a goofball that way.

I just started one under the "Egg, Chicken, & Other Favorite Recipes" Section. Titled "Self-Sufficient Homemade Recipes"

Post all your homemade recipes there. Hope this helps curb some spending for some.
