Selling eggs- people not paying for eggs

I'm amazed you can actually do this in US... Here in Italy they would steal all the eggs, the table, and even the sign.
They stole cabbage from my friend vegetable garden. They stole watermelons from my aunt. They stole the chickens my uncle just culled. And they even jumped the fence to steal my grandma prunes.

I usually give our extra eggs away to family and friends but have had this happen when selling firewood bundles at a roadside stand. I would sell 3 large size bundles for $10 or $3.50 a piece, I would put 12 bundles out at a time and it went well for the 1st couple years. Then it started, instead of $40 dollars in the can there would be $20 and it got to the point of all the wood gone and no money. I just used a coffee can for the money so if someone needed change for a $20 they could maybe make change.

Maybe you should put up a camera and instead of putting eggs out leave 10 bucks on the table.

Where I live it is tomatoes and rockmellons that are regularly sold from roadside stalls. Has been going on for 60yrs.
But times are definately worse than ever for honesty, and more are giving up, or going to the Saturday charity markets to sell.

If you want to spend the time and potential anguish you could put up a game camera or 2. See if it’s the same person(s) or if it is a rotating cast. Do they come by the same time each day, etc. Then decide if you confront the person or call LEO or ?

A few years ago a couple kids were taking eggs from a roadside honesty box and throwing them at cars over a couple weeks. They nailed my window and I chased them into a creek area. Said some things adults probably shouldn’t to kids, but they stopped.

Edit - “kids” were 15-18 year old boys.

I just peeked at this thread a little, might take time to read all 9 pages worth of replies later, but has the poster found out who it was yet? If not they should definitely set up a game camera to see if it's the same person or not. I'd be curious. I just started doing a self-serve farm stand using the honesty system. Haven't gotten many customers yet despite being on a busy road, but I have a game camera watching just in case someone tries to be "dishonest".

I find it easier to barter with eggs. For example I gave two dozen eggs to someone and in return got some home-made cheese and vinegar left over from a batch of kombucha. Another example is I gave three dozen eggs to a friend who in return gave me 20 litres of diesel fuel for my utility vehicle.
