Sept Silkie hatches (Great Hatches)

When's your birthday? Mine's December 28. And I'm glad you're getting some more eggs. I can totally relate to the bidding war. Have her send some of those my way too. ;)

I'm the 19th!! Every time I increased my bid I thought "ok, they won't go higher then that"...and then they'd go higher! I had to walk away before I went any higher! Lol. It worked out good though. And the eBay seller gave me her information and said we can work something out so I think I may get her eggs next month, depending on how this next hatch goes. I'm slowly giving into my addiction!

I got into a bidding war on eBay yesterday! These paint eggs started at $35 and ended up at $76! I had to let it go. I can't spend that much on eggs right now after what I've lost on these last two batches! But then last night I got an awesome email. There is this small farm in NJ, about 3 hours away, that has beautiful silkies. I've been trying to get these eggs for a year but the women never has extras. She wrote me and said her incubator is full and her PAINT silkies laid 11 eggs yesterday!! She's collecting whatever they laid this morning and bringing them to the post office by lunch time today! I'll have them by Saturday! I'm so happy to have more eggs on the way and only a short distance. And they are paints!! Still have 6 going in the incubator. I cleaned both incubators out really, really good yesterday!!
My birthday is the same week as Christmas! I'm getting the octagon 20! Lol. Till then I have to make due with two minis! But the minis can hold 22 eggs combined. So I'm good. Lol.

I love it when things work out like that! So excited for paint babies!!

I have been needing to sell some ducks and now I have some nice people who are coming over right now! If I sell a bunch then maybe I can justify buying just one more batch of Silkie eggs ; )

No way Ruby! Both my older brothers were born on the 19th, not twins and not planned to be the same day they are two years apart. That kinda boggles my mind meeting someone else that shares that bday. Of course I know many people must but how many are there ya know? Maybe it's a popular birthday? I saw a graph in reader's digest I think it was that showed every day of the year and how many people were born on each day, something like that.

Good luck on selling them!! One more silkie batch would be awesome!! (We're such enablers)! Lol.

Really?! That's cool! I was actually due on Christmas but I came early! My last baby that was born is the 15th. I was hoping he'd be the 19th too! I was born 1981, any of your brothers the same age??

I sold some of my ducks... 8 of them! Before I get more eggs though, I need to figure out what is up with my chicks. One of my showgirls started sneezing and then its neck got all weird and curled under. I though maybe it had a little cold and then got dehydrated or something but then a 6 week old, my porcelain chick : ( started to keep it's head down and then last night its neck was curled under. It is so strange!

I have been getting fluids with vitamins in them and they actually do not seem weak generally. I got medicated chick starter today to give all the chicks in case that might help. I gave porcelain chick some moist crumbles and she lifted her head up and is really eating. Her neck curled up a one point but I uncurled it and it didn't curl up again and she is looking better. Still eating. Showgirl chick is not doing as well, harder to get food into it but it takes vitamin water from a dropper. I was gone most of the day and was afraid they might not survive the day but I am feeling more hopeful now and really surprised there is any improvement.

I really don't know what it is, it is like wry neck but long after hatch. I don't know how they would be so vitamin deficient. Any ideas?

I'm sorry to hear that.

Neck problems can occur from poor genetics, lack of riboflavin (a vitamin that is not as common as others in supplements, or so I hear), or diseases such as botulism. It can also be a sign of physical injury, such as a neurological condition, which I hear silkies are prone to. I had one chick that had a head injury. Her name was Mavis, and she lived in my basement until she passed from an infection.

I hope yours get better soon!

Thanks, I just read another thread that made me think it really is wry neck, brought on by the respiratory issue. I will keep giving vitamins... might have to get more tomorrow.

I'm so sorry to hear that. I don't have experience with that. I did have a rabbit that got wry neck. He started acting over all sick and then his neck started to curl to the side. He needed like 3 weeks of antibiotics. It cured up even though his neck stayed like that and he lived a long healthy life. I don't know if it's the same in chicks. The vitamins is a great idea. Selenium I read was really helpful for chicks. Have you been googling it? I hope you get to the bottom of it. Maybe disinfect the brooder really well. (I'm just trying to think). :hugs

My new batch of paint eggs came today!! A little over half had excellent air cells!! So I'm happy and excited to set them tonight. I only have 4 in the bator still going.

Awesome! Congrats on the eggs!

I had a question. It seems like everyone is buying Paint Silkies this year, but I hadn't even heard of them until this year. When were they developed?
