September Hatch-a-long!

Pics
Hi,

I set 6 under my broody lady on Thursday, so I'm day 3 today, by my reckoning they should be due on the 20th. This is only my 2nd attempt at a broody hatch. 1st one only resulted in one successful hatch out of 6. Hoping for a better success rate this time. New broody mumma and new supplier of eggs too.

Good luck!

Yep, these eggs are from my own flock.
I'm prepared to help the last one. I just want to wait to make sure it absorbed it's yolk and all thay. We gave it a bigger hole to breath from im the meantime.

So two of the eight cochins hatched yesterday and five are pipping. I put in eleven on the 24th and two on the 27th. I plan on candling them later; I don't want to interfere with the temperature by opening the incubator while the other eggs are hatching.

Here are the 3 amigos. Stressed me out all weekend. All i had is this tiny shavings. I ran out of my normal stuff.
As this is my first time with chicks so young, I'm worried they might try and eat it? Or am i being silly?

Yes, they will peck at and try to eat anything that they can fit into their mouths.

Mine are due to start hatching tomorrow. It look's like I'm going to end up with Labor Day chick's! :gig

One of the suggestions I have seen in the past is to put down paper towels over the shavings for the first few days so they learn what is food..... I have done this with success especially with turkeys.

I don't even use shavings in my brooder, just those XL Puppy Pee Pad's.

We use newspapers with paper towels on the top until they are old enough not to slide on the newspaper, then we just use the papers.

By the way, three more cochins hatched today with the remaining three pipping. Out of the other thirteen, all but two are fertile. Hopefully, we'll get a pullet this year.
