September Hatch-A-Long!

well my sweet little wrong end pipper died a few minutes ago. Sad sad..and my kids are sad (worst part) But the positive news is 4 have hatched and are looking great. 2 are zipping right now and the last one has pipped. If i get 7 out of 8 on my first hatch I will be happy!! Day 21 tomorrow! Here is Godzilla...im thinking Roo. What do yall think?

I hope it was the only one and it was a fluke I will be so upset to get this far and they die. They go on lockdown tomorrow early afternoon!!! Praying that some hatch I will candle tonight
and make sure I at least see movement in some!!!! I would be happy with 1 anything else would be a bonus!!!! I'm glad some of your made it so there is hope yet!!!

I'm so worried now since that one died almost formed! Day 17 (almost 18) and not seeing much movement during candling could that be because they are big now and don't have much room to move or do you think there not gonna make it either? I will be devastated!!!

Good! Odds are good the rest are fine too, just slow. I would definitely check to find out if maybe your bator is running low temps.

Yeah my A/C decided to stop working on the hottest week of the year so I dealt with high temps being more of an issue, but I would open the bator to cool it down from 102.5f (still air) so that may have been the issue. I put a window unit in my bedroom and left the bator in there for the past week, and I candled before lockdown and all was good, so I'm just waiting it out and I know better now.

I believe 102 is what you want with still air. Also, keep in mind that its going to be an average with a little variation. If you try to keep it at exactly the right temp you will generally mess with your temps too much. I've been learning all this myself the hard way over the past few months, LOL!

See everything I read said that still air bators needed to be 100.5-101.5, so maybe I was running too low. Which would mean that I pulled them out of the turner too early. Would that hurt them at that late stage?

Oh, my two eggs both were beautiful fluffy chicks when I woke up this morning. Only 2 eggs that were in the hatcher - do I get to call that my first 100% hatch?? LOL! My 2 Breda are next to go into lockdown tomorrow.

Now I have my little turkey to distact me. By far my favorite. SHe/he went with me everywhere today. I put her in the warmer to sleep. She stayed 15 minutes then got up jumped on my computer, jumped into my lap and went to sleep. I can't even leave my room with out her jumping off of the bed to follow me. I'm calling her Max(ine). My new bestest buddy. Only 1 day old.

End of day 20 here. Still no rocking, pipping or cheeping.

Candled them again just now and only 2 are still moving inside :-( Hope the others are ok in there.

The wait is killing me

They can look dead when they are resting up for the next big event. Internal pipping, external pipping or zipping. Good luck.

TEMPERATURE
Never trust the thermometer that comes with the incubator, always check it.
The thermometer that came with my incubator was off by 5 degrees.
That could mean life or death for your babies.
With a Forced Air Incubator (fan model) you can get the best hatch rate by keeping the temperature at 99.5º F. throughout the entire incubation period. HOWEVER, when using a Still Air incubator (no fan) at 102º F. The reason for different temperatures is that with a fan model the circulating air warms all around the egg while still air temperatures are warmer at the top of the egg than at the bottom. The temperature is measured at the level where the embryos develop (at the top of the egg). A high temperature tends to produce early hatches. A consistently cooler temperature tends to increase incubation times and produce weakened chicks. In both cases the total chicks hatched will be reduced. Prepare your incubator and run it for several days before adding eggs, to be positive you are maintaining correct incubation temperature. NOTE: It is common that when adding eggs the temperature will drop but should come back up to correct temperature within an hour or two. Don’t rest the thermometer's bulb touching the eggs or the incubator. Incorrect readings will result. Did you know that 10/13 day old embryos begin to produce excess heat in the incubator? Most large commercial incubators will spend more time cooling than heating!
