September Hatch-A-Long!

So I know I'm only on day 4 and 5, but since this is my first time I'm a bit curious to the development process and so I can't help myself, and 3 of 6 had veins and embryos! The other 3 were too porous to tell, but I'm so eggcited!

I have seen it, they say heart issues. And common in silkies and other bantams. Breeding to get the smallest bird leads to heart defects. Dont know how true this is, but it sure made me feel better. I felt like there was nothing more I could have done, and it was not something I caused. I have had 2 this yr so far. Both I held until they took their last breath.
ok so if chickens and other animals too can be breed down to make smaller and smaller chickens,,,, couldnt some one also breed them up to make bigger ones?? could you imagine a silkie the size of a brahma?? lol

Well, I got a couple new additions this evening. My EE chicks are hatching. This one pictured puzzled me with the coloring cause I have an EE roo and 1 EE hen and then a few RIR hens. At first I thought, ok its a little red, but then I realized it was from a green egg so definitely not a RIR mom. Then it dawned on me , I just rehomed a nice Buff Orpington roo and I bet he threw his hat in the ring before he left! So this may be a Buff cross with an EE.

Hi all quick question for a first timer. I set eggs 8/17, 8/19, 8/20. When should "lockdown" be and will the eggs suffer from not being turned? I got an extra bator from a friend but it will not keep the temp steady. Not sure I can get another shipped to me before lockdown.thanks in advance
3 days before hatch is usual...your going to have to add the eggs each day...if you put them in the high humidity too soon it will cause problems with eggs dehydrating enough! putting them in the high humidity a day or two early can cause the inside of the egg to become sticky or like glue that the chicks can't turn in....so not sooner than the 3 days

Quote: use the old one from your friend to keep the eggs that don't need to go to lock down...rig it with a light bulb to hold the temp...then use the one that works correctly for the hatch...cause you do need to monitor the humidity for those 3 days! look on line to get an idea for the light bulb....I think it'll be easier to keep the ones that don't need to lock down at the right temp that way! anyway think about it

That baby looks just like my EE/buff Orpington cross pullet when she hatched! Either way the baby sure is cute! :)
