September Hatch-A-Long!

the chicks that hatch from these eggs will be my first serama's...i have wanted serama's for a long time but finally got some and a good variety of feather types(got smooth, silkied, frizzled, silkied frizzled(sizzled), and booted(feathered legs))

Bantamlover124 from what i've read and other serama owners i've talk to they can be very broody and hatch eggs if you let them

i posted this in the wrong month, so thought id repost over here.. my eggs are due september 6th

i am on day 6 of this cycle.
i have 10/11 with veins :) but 1 red ring :(

i also have one baby whos ahead of the game and was moving yesterday ( day 5), saw his heartbeat on day 4.

i do have a question though. all these eggs have spider veins, but i can only see 1 embryo. im guessing the rest are under the air cell. is this a problem?

also -- how can i lower the humidity. i wanted to try a dry hatch this time, but my humidity is between 50 and 60 already, with no water added.

when my humidity gets higher than I want I just remove the plug that is in my incubator. I did one dry hatch and didn't get good results so I stick with the 40-50% range until lockdown then shoot for 60-70% at lockdown. My Genesis Hovabator actually does quite well with keepin the humidity and temp right where I want it using the water cells they say to use in the tray <3 It's new to me this year and I'm LOVING everything about the forced air, digital temp control, big window to watch hatch <3 I just love my incubator LOL

Update on mine, on my 7 day candling I had to throw out 10 eggs that didn't develop at all, they were either just not fertilized or something was wrong with them, a few had that "spotted" look to them when candling and the ones I threw out hadn't developed AT ALL.
So that leaves me with 24 eggs in the bator and I won't candle again til lockdown. I tend to have the best luck when opening the incubator as little as possible. When I move them from the turner to lockdown they will go into cardboard egg cartons, pointy side down for hatch. I got the tip from a gentleman that hatches hundreds of eggs(or more) a year and he said his hatch rate doubled doing it. It sure made mine better!! I can't wait to see who makes it to lockdown

i have my eggs in egg cartons right now - i just lift one side of the incubator, and then tilt the other side every time its time to flip them.

i also have both plugs out of my incubator. i put in a dry sponge -- hoping thatll help suck some of the humidity out.

24 is still a lot of babies for you :) Good luck !!

im already trying to get more eggs for my next cycle, since its so hard to find good eggs where iam .. jeez this is more addicting than facebook games!! hahaha.

Haha! The second person who said that about putting eggs upside down was a good hatch rate-definitely going to try that :)

Hello,

I have been reading BYC voraciously for weeks now. I don't have a hx in poultry so I am trying to get up to speed. What kind of incubators do you recommend without spending a young and growing fortune? I understand shipped eggs standing on their pointy end for 12 to 24 hours after arriving. I understand the problem with the air sac and chick development. I am concerned with incubators that roll the eggs. Am I correct that they would be best incubated with the pointy end down? Perhaps in a cardboard egg carton? I feel that eggs should not clang or slap against each other in an automatic turner. I would rather use some paper towel to pad them apart.

Thank you I know I can be an awful pest-.

i am using an egg carton right now, instead of an egg turner. i love it. i have one of those 18 egg cartons and its a perfect size.

i also then can candle right in the box, and dont have to touch the eggs. i just take the lid off, and candle in the incubator.

i am also keeping my eggs in egg cartons for the hatching.
