September Hatch-A-Long!

Well #6 didn't make it!

I was pretty sure it was gone when I got up this morning. But I went ahead and started like I was assisting until I was completely positive. It had made a nice size hole where it had pipped, and its beak was right at the hole. It didn't look shrink wrapped and still had good air space. But it hasn't absorbed all of its yolk. Looks like it just wasn't meant to make it.

Its sad, but Im surprised that I have 5 sweet little babies who seem to be quite healthy and have all their parts. 5 of 6 for my very 1st time seems rather good to me, although 100% of course would have been great. We shall see in the days following how these babies do.

You did great.

the little crippled chick is strong this morning....recovering from the dog bite, grrr....so my husband and I decided we are going to try to teach it to walk on it's one leg...I'll feed it by hand until it learns to get around

this morning one of my 3 week old polish chicks is ill...just last week another from that hatch passed....well I'm giving it electrolytes with vitamins, sugar and vet rx mix!! it's drinking a little on it's own and pecking around but it's weak...we shall see!

Oh my heavens. I have one more baby today. I had 9 eggs that were alive at day 18 in an extremely wonky, quickly thrown together homemade styro-cooler-bator. The temp fluctuations in this thing are insane. It never stayed at 99.5 for more than an hour. It dropped down to 85 and went up to about 112 more often than a little. I was sure I killed them all. I candled yesterday on day 21 just in case and 3 of them were still alive! So I fired up the Brinsea mini again and tossed them in there for temp stability. One pipped yesterday and hasn't done anything since, one isn't doing anything yet, and the third that hadn't done anything last I checked either..checked it a few minutes ago and there's a baby! EE/OE. It's the spitting image of a penguin right now so that's what I'm calling it, but if its the only one that makes it, it's name will instead be Miracle. :p

What does the Vet RX do? I have seen it but I wasn't sure of it's exact purpose. I love Nutri Drench. I was looking for save a chick but all Tractor Supply had was Nutri Drench. I have since found Savea chick but it's not as good as the chicken crack(Nutri Drench). I know I sound like a comercial, I swear I am not being paid to say it.

Happy to hear the cripple is doing well, Heidisgran! Fingers crossed for the polish!

thanks guys...the vet rx is for all that ails, it's herbal I believe.... I thought I heard what could be wheezing so I thought I'd add that to the mixture I concocted. DeannaA what did you use to suspend the chicklet you put in a sling?? I'm thinking if I make a sling so the baby has to put it's weight on it's good leg it'll get the idea to balance on it, I was thinking maybe a stick across the top of the bin they're in to suspend the sling??
