Yeah, I have no idea... I seem to get a "feeling" about certain eggs. I don't know what it is. Something about the timing, the shape of the shadow in the shell, how the egg feels, but it is certainly far from scientific. I was wrong about Treasure! I saw no internal pip and no movement on day 21 after the bator was cold and assumed she was dead. When I first opened the shell up I assumed I was doing an eggtopsy. One thing I had noted about her egg before hand was that the shape of the shadow inside the air cell was very confusing - just didn't seem right. Once I opened it up I saw why. Generally speaking if they were all set together and don't start pipping around the same time I start to assume something is wrong (because for me it has been true and I have had so many malpositions). If the eggs are about the same size they should be running out of air around the same time. I think unconsciously I give a bout 12 hours from the first pipper - then any that haven't pipped get quickly candled to check for an internal pip/movement and I go from there. I know if I don't at least provide an external pip to a stuck chick then she will almost certainly die. If I do that then I can give her theoretically up to 3 days to sit there and she should be fine as long as she is getting air. I don't have any rules but in hindsight it seems like that is what I do, LOL!I'm so sorry.
You are much better at recognizing who to help than I am. I have improved. My odds are much better. How do you know? The hardest for me is recognizing malpositioned chicks. I can't tell unless I open the shell and the membrane but in most cases that would be too much help if the chick isn't in the wrong place.
I used a knee high stocking. Cut it in half, split down the middle stopped 2 " from the bottom.thanks guys...the vet rx is for all that ails, it's herbal I believe.... I thought I heard what could be wheezing so I thought I'd add that to the mixture I concocted. DeannaA what did you use to suspend the chicklet you put in a sling?? I'm thinking if I make a sling so the baby has to put it's weight on it's good leg it'll get the idea to balance on it, I was thinking maybe a stick across the top of the bin they're in to suspend the sling??

well I did it! I've never done it before never thought I would or could but my little polish was getting sicker and she could no longer stand up then she start throwing up!
I really had very little hope for the crippled baby it also had pain in the gimpy leg which was short and reddish the other chicks pecked at it and made it cry...it was just sleeping all the time...
I just put them in together after I kissed them each and asked the lord to help me!
I didn't tell anyone except you all...when anyone here asks me I'll just tell them they passed!
It was an act of love.......................thinking more about them than yourself...................I didn't even open the margarine tub to look after...with in seconds I heard nothing more!

in honesty I guess it happen to them! I am haunted by their precious eyes! you know what I'll do for myself...I'll spend the evening sitting in back watching the rest of the flock...the babies of various ages in their coop and playpen and the grown ups running to me for treats...and some of the most humorous of them all my month old ducks swimming in their now too small feed pan we use as a pond!!
I've got a bucket full of health babies born Friday and Saturday and more due this next week...looking forward to my first attempt and turkeys around the 19th!
thank the Lord for this web site...we can be here for the joys and the sorrows...thanks for your support!
