September Hatch-A-Long!

So I'm on day 7-9 of incubation and so I did the candling thing on all 26 eggs. Out of my porcelain silkies I have 1 that's really good, one that was good but looks under developed, and 6 that were horribly bad. 2 blood rings, 2 yolks at the bottom and 2 that stopped developing by day 2. I have 13 of 13 bantam Cochins that look amazing and 2 good EEs and 3 that are really porous and too hard to tell. I really wanted those porcelains so I'm seriously bummed right now. I can't find any really nice local ones and the few breeders that I'm will to drive 3-6 hours for have a hard time with their porcelains laying well and don't have any available. So I bought ones off eBay from the other side of the country, and it didn't go well. I can't be doing everything wrong because those Cochins look amazing and all 13 are doing great. That's how it works I guess.

Meet Tiny and Godzilla.

Tiny is a OEGB and Godzilla a RIR x. 'Zilla likes to eat Tiny's toes but Tiny likes to trip him and peck at his eyes so its fair. lol As long as no real damage is done.
LOL so stinkin cute!!!!

Yep, if the others are doing well I'd say its just "shipped egg syndrome" :( So sorry. My shipped eggs have been horrible too. I am sure being in TX with 105+ heat doesn't help the shipping issues either.

ok so friday at 8 am will begin the official day18...will it be ok to do my final candle and put them in the haching bator thursday night??
It is best not to rush the process. Day 18 is only relative since we as humans dont feel the vibrations when they are ready to pip like a broody that knows exactly when to stop turning them. So we use day 18 as a "happy medium".

Hey guys--
I originally posted this on my NC thread where I usually am, but no one seems to be up so re-posting here for all you experienced hatchers!!!

I went into lockdown yesterday morning.
I had an Isbar rocking all day and did a pip this afternoon.
I could hear it chirping for awhile too.
For the past about 6 hours it's not moving at all, no noise, no more pipping.
Do I open it and try to do something???
I don't know what could be going wrong, but I feel like it should be out by now.

I have 2 other marans that started pipping around dinner time.
I'm laying in bed and I start hearing a loud chirping from down stairs (the incubator is in my dining room table a floor down on the opposite side). I go to look and another marans that wasn't even pipped when I looked a couple hours ago is out and very loud. It is running all over the incubator jumping on eggs, knocking them in to each other. I had them in an egg turner and at lock down took them all out and strategically laid them all on their sides against the side of the bator at a 30 degree angle. Can this crazy chick crashing them around cause damage by them rolling around when they're supposed to be in lockdown???
This has never happened to me before.

THANKS!

I'm sorry!
I'm far from an expert (on hatch #6), but I use candling to learn and always put my eggs back in the bator, just in case!
(My first hatch one looked like a dud I opened it up more than half way through and the chick came out heart still beating, but obviously too young to live. I felt like a chicken abortionist and since then always leave them in!!!)

Also, I know mail order eggs can be risky, but my personal experience is I've only done one local hatch-- bought eggs from a BYC'er (36) and went and picked them up locally. Did everything as normal and ONE hatched! My worst mail order hatch was 1 out of 4 and my best was 17 out of 18 when the auction I won was 12+.
If you have to do mail order eggs (which I live in town, no roosters), just look into them. Read the feedback reviews, ask for them to be shipped on a Monday, look for sellers fairly close to you (I'm in NC and will only order Fl-Pa on east coast and La to Oh in midwest area). I've seen eggs I really wanted from Oregon and California but figured they wouldn't make it. Also have them sit upright (little side down) for 24 hours at room temp before putting them in your incubator so they can settle.

Not saying you didn't do this, just sharing my ebay experience. It's super risky. Side note-- I am obsessed with Ayam Cemani's which are a super hard breed to get in the US right now. Someone on another thread bought a dozen hatching eggs for $1400 (whcih is the going rate) and his hatched out and aren't even the pure breed, don't look anything like it!!!! So ebay can be super risky!!!
