September Hatch-A-Long

Just updating :)

My broodys eggs are due tomorrow, can't wait!
I had to go through and candle my incubator eggs, the room I keep the bator in had that tell tale egg fart smell that accompanies a rotten one. I pulled 14 clears, but couldn't find one that looked like it was producing that awful smell. The only thing off was an egg with a huge air cell, but it still looked like a normal egg. However, after pulling out all the clear eggs, it doesn't stink in there anymore so I'm assuming I got it and don't have to worry about one exploding. I hope, anyway!

Congrats to those with chicks and hood luck to everyone whose still waiting!

I am on day 15 right now. setting up the second incubator for the hatch. Since I have two batches of eggs in the incubator at the moment, 10 days apart I cant put the incubator on lock down. I am doing dry hatch for lock down what humidity do I put it up to? my humidity has been 19-30% I was thinking 50-55 would be a good raise?

We could all name a pullet Ethel and start a new club!

I am going to have to start a thread..

Just to poll everyone that has a bird named Ethel, or will have....

So I started a thread/poll to see how many Ethels there are here:

Also I am in on Ethel. I have an unnamed BA pullet that hasn't laid yet. She is now an Ethel.

Now I have an Ethel! She is a sweet little turkey. I'm sure it is a she :) Ethel and... Idk! Lol on to the new thread!!!

One chick out!

Pipped sometime in the early morning hours and hatched before noon. Now if the rest would follow its example.

OMG! I hope you are right!!!! I didn't think of the temp inside the egg as such...maybe there's more hope than I thought

. The eggs themselves never got too cold or hot, so maybe I can relax. Meh, whatever happens, happens!

I was soooo mad this morning because this hatch was perfectly timed for hatch day on the first day of school holidays. Two weeks for the kids to mother the ducklings! I really felt like screaming this morning

I had the same experience.... with our first hatch of ducklings... none of them made it. That was hard for my son and for me. The next time I was determined to get them to hatch and I may have still not had humidity low enough for them and had to help them out.

Disclaimer... these are only my thoughts... in the interest of getting some ducklings for your kiddos... but since some have been internally pipped for a while and then had some ups and downs with temp... you could make some safe holes for them... just so they don't run out or air before they can pip or in case they need help out.

My broody Serama has a chick!! I could hear it last night but still haven't seen it. The other egg is pipped. Then I got the brilliant idea to take the chicks I just hatched and put them under her! They are just a few days old and it is working so far. She is keeping them tucked under her! I put food right next to her so they can reach it if she won't let them out of the nest. Can't wait to see the new babies and she is going to need a bigger space with 6 chicks!!

I know I said I would not talk about Ethel and her babies, BUT they are a week old today... SO here are some Birthday pictures!

I m a little worried about the one chick, It is the one standing like a penquin. It seems smaller and frail. On the good side I did watch it eat or peck while I was with them.

All 5 babies note the one standing up straight.

This is the one that worries me, the dark one.
