September Hatch-A-Long

So jealous of you all!

I have no idea how many babies to expect, no idea how many eggs I am hatching. I just assume I am hatching some. Ethel is getting skinnier and skinnier.

Yesterday, I was working in the shed, when Ethel came in. I welcomed her back from her nest. Then I gave her some bird seed that was handy. I had a bag of dried meal worms for her in the shed. I wanted to get her more protein as she sets on the nest. She refused the worms. She would have nothing to do with them!

The other turkeys and chickens scarfed them down, but not her. So I went to the feed shack and got her some 28% protein mash, she loved it. I guess unless it is mash or seeds she will not eat it. I do love how she always looks me up and greets me on her breaks. I thought I would be sneaky and see if I could get a better idea of where her nest is. I sat in chair and waited for her to go back to the nest.

She cleaned herself, walked around, chased a noisy chicken, did everything but go towards her nest. I decided to run into the house and grab a coke while waiting for her to go to her nest. I was not gone 2 minutes. When I got back she was gone!

How in the "bleep" did she know I was watching her? I was trying to be very natural and ignoring her......... I wish I knew how many eggs she has......I wish I could candle one or two.....Sigh.....I am at her mercy!

In the Search bar type in "Egg Carton Hatching" and you'll see all sorts of results, pros and cons. It may help with your decision.

thanks, I did a search too but it was late at night and I got too tired. One thing that stood out from a post someone made was they kept the lid of the carton on so that when it's time to rotate the eggs all they do is close the lid and I guess tilt the carton side to side, that way they can turn them all at once. Have tried this?

I didn't know turkeys could be so sly!! How funny! I was thinking of getting one myself....

Candled my TJ's eggs this morning.... Nope. All were clear and it's Day 6 for them. Eggtopsy revealed most all not fertile, period.

Some rooster is slacking or TJ's is just filling cartons willy-nilly with whatever's on hand.

Amazing how they know isn't it.

Bummer.

I guess this means we have to readjust the bonus points you get for using TJ;s eggs..

Nah. It means that unless I get a stellar hatch I've gotta do the mail order eggs again....hopefully with a greater than 40% hatch rate....or gamble and buy TJ eggs again OR find another store with fertile eggs.

I sure hope the pullet hatching gods are smiling on my incubator.... Three weeks of anxiety is plenty.

(Although, if I do have to hatch again, I'll still be in this group!)

If had any eggs I would send you them, but. my babies innocent to have eggs yet....

I understand your anxiety, I spend 60 days with the incubator running and no babies... actually it was day 85 before my first baby!
