September Hatch-A-Long

Are Henny Penny and RJ brother and sister? Sounds like some dilute olive eggs could be in the making. I'll keep your offer in mind, though. We may work something out depending on how it goes this weekend.

Speaking of.....

LOCKDOWN!!!!

As you can see, I cut the egg carton sides down quite a bit so if the ones with really stretchy air cells pip low they won't be encumbered. The shelf liner is on the bottom of the bator to help keep things clean and give chicks better footing, and there's a space there cut out where I can insert a straw through one of the vent holes to keep the reservoirs filled. Two hygrometers that I know work and a couple of reliable thermometers that are in sync. Plenty of space for chicks to wander around in, flop out, dry off.

It's all set up and now the hard part is the waiting and keeping out of the way (and out of the bator)

I may be down a Welsummer egg as I had a little butterfingers slip/rap/jolt while moving it during lockdown setup. No shell cracking, but it was a pretty good knock. Darn! That leaves three Welsummers that look good. I'm hoping all 5 hatch and I didn't do too much damage.

It would be nice to have at least a pair of pullets from each breed.

Do well, Little Eggs! You're on the last leg of your journey to chickdom.

GOOD LUCK ON LOCK-DOWN! May you hear lots of peeping very soon!

As for RJ and Henny Penny I had to look at my papers but if I'm reading right they're cousins or something close to it... Ewww! I never thought about it! I took them because of their temperament LOL

Henny Penny (srping chick from '13) was in the last batch from Rojo (1st hatch from my dads original PR spring of '10) and Rojo's littlest Brother or son JR (it's not clear who was the father here but it was fall of '12) took over after Rojo started attacking my dad who is RJ's (fall of '13) father... It looks crazier written here than I thought it was!

Ah, the chicken love triangle! It's like a feathered soap opera!

Btw, I'm jumping in this dog and pony show...I mean cock and pullet show. I'm betting 9 Silver Appleyard ducks eggs, 6 Silver Sussex, 6 bantam Mille Fleur Cochins, and 24 mixed guineas, and I hope I win. Cause my last hatch was 0.
I may be having better luck this time though since I candled the ducks and all 9 were fertile and had veining present.
Wish me luck please please please. ..

Good luck

My ducklings will be a mix between magpie, cayuga, and peking. We have one female of each, a cayuga drake and a magpie drake.

Well, well, well.... I put them in lockdown last night and this morning at dawn -- Day 19 -- I heard unmistakenably loud peeping! No pips, though. Just one. Probably a roo.

Is it too early to hear peeping? I don't think I miscalculated my calendar. Maybe it's just an ambitious chick....

LOL.... Yeah, those rare TJ eggs. Trader Joe's eggs (from the store) are about the least expensive eggs you can buy for hatching at about $3 per dozen. You get what you pay for, though, as they've been through the war, so to speak, of washing, packing, shipping and refrigeration. But there's a whole forum of the Trader Joe's Hatching Club here on BYC of folks who have had a successful hatch of eggs found in your dairy section.

@earlyredrooster

Thanks for the luck. My second choice was Cayugas. How do you like your Cayugas?

@Peep_Show

Are they sold as "hatching eggs?" I've been to Trader Joes, but didn't see hatching eggs. Is this just during part of the year, or are they eating eggs that happen to be hatchable?

55 eggs on day 5 today, candle but can only see clearly into the blue and white eggs, all 17 blue eggs and 2/3 of the white eggs look great! all of the 55 that hatch are already sold but I would really like to add some olive eggers to my flock. my EE's lay the blue eggs and they are covered by a blue orpington rooster ,would this give me the " olive egg" gene? in pullets that hatch?

@lauraschicks
My Cayuga's are my favorite except that they are not as calm as I would like, that and the hen developed a top-knot at 12wks. If she passes this on to her offspring I will put them in the freezer and start over.

My drake "Clyde".

"Bonny" my hen.

Lockdown starts tomorrow. Of 116 quail eggs set, I have 97 left. I think that's pretty good considering it takes about 9 days to collect that many and some get rained on before I can get home from work and collect them.

Good Luck!!!! DH has talked about raising quail I haven't been convinced yet that it is something I want to do.. Mind you, quail is very good but just not sure about raising/breeding them
