Serama eggs from Castle Delight Seramas

It will be fine for 3 days. I know what you are going through. This last hatch I had one hatch early then nothing...and nothing...and nothing lol. Finally I couldn't stand it any longer and pulled a couple to candle. They had internally pipped and I heard chirping. A few hours later I had babies everywhere. Did you candle them before you put them into lockdown...to pull out the duds, check air sac development etc?

Checked them today, alas other than the one hatched chick, only 4 other eggs showed any development. All the rest were completely clear. The four are still in the incubator. Hopefully one will hatch so my lone chick won't be TOO spoiled. Must have been a rocky trip for them.

Did you happen to jot down the names of the roosters on the eggs that didn't develop or see how the air sacs were?

I know Carla's were from broken air sacs due to the post office probably using it like a ball. I have another batch sent just 1 week after yours and hers that are developing great 14 out of 16 I think she said - same roosters as Carla's batch, same packaging etc. I had another report of clear eggs just last night - all smooth like yours - sent out one week after yours but I also a report from a local person who set smooth eggs at the same time you did and has 10 out of 12 developing. I regularly check fertility once a week in all the pens - break open eggs and look for the bullseye so I know the eggs are fertile which makes all this even more perplexing.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the other ones and of course putting you back on the list for replacement eggs if you want them? I do not like to see anyone have bad hatches for whatever reason so I always replace them.

edited to say I just ran across a thread with ex-postal workers commenting about how packages are not xrayed. I can't really verify it but I think I would trust them? But then I found another thread saying that mail is randomly put through xray machines at the airports when it is shipped. Just more confusion...

Letting them set overnight - at least 12 hours - increased hatch rates per the posters, which I always do that but I'm not sure everyone does?

Out of 5 Othello eggs, 4 developed, one hatched, one just pipped (keeping my fingers crossed) and 2 remain in the incubator. Of 4 Romeo eggs, one developed and is currently rocking a bit, but hasn't pipped (fingers crossed again). The others were Louis and Zephyr, one Louis egg had a small disk all the others just candled clear. I'll keep you posted!!!
I did post pics of the hatched baby on the other thread, he/she is about as cute as can be!!!!

One of my brothers worked for UPS for awhile and said that there EVERYTHING gets thrown; especially if it said 'Fragile'. Don't know if the post office is the same. All it would take is one joker.

Not surprising. Thank you for those numbers and roosters...I will double check all those this week. Already checked Othello this morning - all good. I just get sick when I hear about bad hatches because I had so many of mine own last winter. Rocking is a good sign!

Laura, also have them double, "quad-drooble" (or whatever number times it may take) check the temps. Even with different thermometers! I know this from experience. Not all thermometers give exact or even same readings. I have had really good results since I've discovered this. (had very bad!!!! hatches early on). Just thought I would throw that in there so no-one else has to have any of those (very sad) experiences.
From one who knows,
Paula

Yes, very good advice. I recalibrate my supposedly calibrated from the factory incubator every single hatch. It was off the first time so I made adjustments but now it seems to be holding steady. I will still continue to calibrate because it only takes a little bit to screw up your hatch completely. I learned this the hard way too! Thank you for sharing that Paula

How are your CDS babies doing btw?

Very well! I need to repost new pics. I will try and do that, soon. They are starting to get little personalities. (some good, some bad; but all very very cute) I have a few of my own serama eggs that went into lock down last night. And turkey eggs! They will go into lock down next week. They are very hard to candle. But I have found a few sites that I'm getting advice on. (they are royal palms, the smaller turkey) Funny how I'm getting into the small or miniture of these little guys!

Thanks for inquiring! I'll go and work on some pics now!

Yay! Looking forward to seeing the babies and hearing about the turkey hatch. I found this site yesterday and posted it on my website and my facebook page. I think it has some very good information for both buyers and sellers of hatching eggs. I learned a few things myself. Everyone who knows me personally and has had any interaction with me knows that I take bad hatch rates seriously and try to do my best to make sure the buyer is happy and gets babies. I will continue to do that no matter what because the shoe has been on the other foot but this article had some interesting information in it which I found very helpful.

Had to share - have 14 eggs from Castle Delight that were set last Wednesday; candling last night showed 3 clear, 9 definitely with peeplets inside, and 2 undecided (I kept in hoping they were late growers). Very excited! Hoping for a hatch of 9 healthy chicks - will let you know Oct 2/3! Woohoo!

12 eggs arrived today, they got unwrapped, rested for awhile in an egg carton pointy side down.
Then were candled and moved into a warm incubator. I have no idea what to look for when candling, but took copious notes. I have an electronic temp probe taped to one of the turner arms so I can monitor the temperature. Will be taking lots of notes. I only plan to candle at 7 days, and then again with placed on lockdown, here's hoping for a decent hatch.
