Serama with swollen/irritated eye

Day 5 of using the drops. I always flush the eyes first with saline water wait a few minutes and then add the ofloxacin ( 2 drops per eye) followed with vetrx ( around the eye and on the roof of the mouth ). I'm sad to report that nothing has changed, his eyes are still the same. Not really sure what else to try. I guess I will continue with the drops for another few days and see if there's any change :(

I've been following from the start but didn't have a lot of helpful info to offer. I feel really badly that you aren't getting any answers, but I think most folks are at a loss like yourself. I wanted to add that I once had a little Silkie rooster who took a peck to the eye. There were no real symptoms at first aside from a bit of a squint. Within a few days it was a full-blown swollen eye with discharge. If I hadn't seen him take the peck, I might have assumed something awful like Coryza or MG. I. like you, went through all of the antibiotics, eye drops, etc. The swelling went down mostly and the discharge disappeared. Aside from a good-sized bump under his lower eyelid, he seemed perfectly fine. There was no more discharge and he was eating/behaving perfectly normally. I waited for almost two weeks and the bump did not subside so I decided to start another course of antibiotics. About two days into that I was applying warm compress to his face and a bit of a scab came off. At first I assumed that it was just a bit of crusty drainage from where his eye had been gunky but I soon noticed that there was a hole. He'd developed an abscess well below the initial injury. I opened the hole up a bit to see what I was working with and I found the whitish leathery pus like you are removing from your bird's eyes. It came out in one big piece about the size of a dime. I actually sat the bird down on its feet immediately to make sure I hadn't removed anything vital. lol Within days he was completely healed. I spoke with my vet and she said that this is actually fairly common with birds and that it often will not heal unless removed. I just wonder if your bird doesn't have an abscess somewhere in his orbital that is further irritating his eyes. I know it's probably not much help and have no idea what you could/should do about it but that is my only experience with anything at all resembling this. I hope you can get some answers soon.

Thanks you for sharing your experience. The only reason that leads me to believe it's not a peck or injury is that the other eye started showing the same signs. I'm going to call an exotic bird vet tomorrow to see if maybe they will see him. I think I've done all I can

Sorry to hear it tony. Are any of the others sick too or showing similar symptoms? Good luck with the vet- can't remember if I mentioned it, but the exotic bird vet has been the one that's helped me over the years. Really hoping you can get some help with this little guy.

No, he's the only one.

Glad that you're not dealing with others who are sick! It does sounds like it's something internal to him, like an abscess or some other kind of injury. I really do wish you luck with the vet trying to get some answers.

Hey @tonyschicks , saw you posted over on my thread that you were at the vet with your rooster. Hope you got some answers- let us know!

(PS- my hen seems back to normal, like nothing happened. Weird!)

The vet said that it seemed to be a respiratory problem even though there aren't any typical signs. She said that I wasn't giving the proper dose of baytril at .1cc, I should of been giving him .16cc. She also said baytril would of been her treatment of choice but since he was already taking it he might be immune to it. So she switched the meds and his eye drops to a cream. Says it will penetrate more than the drops. She also took a swab sample to send to a lab to determine if she is treating properly. Let's see how this 10 course goes.
