Hi, I am new to BYC but I could use some help/advice.
I have one almost grown serema rooster (his hen died and I think he might have killed her).

He has taken to pecking very hard!

The day before my hen died my grandaughter came and told me he was pecking the hen. I didn't think much about it since I raised them from eggs. But now that he pecks me (leaving bruises) I'm thinking he needs some lessons. How do I get him to quit pecking? I started young on handling both of them teaching them how to stand. So this pecking is new.

I have new babies starting to grow up and I haven't started teaching them or handling them much as I sure don't want them pecking me.

Do you file or trim their beaks to keep the pecking from hurting so much? If you do will this hurt in the scoring if you decide you wish to show them?

Any advice would be nice.

Well, if this were a standard roo, I would cure him with a trip to the crock pot. But since he is a Serama, I might have more patience...and he wont make much of a meal...lol

I think the main idea behind changing thier attitude is to reassert your dominance over him. Feed him last, carry him around while you are in the coop area. Pick him up alot.

I have one OEGB roo who has turned into such as pissant that only DH will go into his pen. If it were up to me, he would be outta here. Naughty thing!

Good luck!

When you carry him around, no need to be gentle about it. Roughly pick him up, not like you're going to pet him. Carry him sideways, upside down, like he is yours to do with as you please. Let the hens see you do it. That is how I cured a Cochin cockerel who went out of his way to peck me. He is so sweet now.

That's cool how your picture changes! I'll be back tomorrow or later maybe. I've got evening chores to do now! Thanks everyone!

I'll try to get some pictures this next week and post them.

I also have ordered eggs from serema land off of BYC. Sure wish I knew when they were going to get here! More than that I hope they all hatch since they are coming quite aways!

I have a question for serema breeders....How many hens per roo? Right now I have the one grown roo, four young roos, five young hens and one more serema that I think is a hen but I am unsure at the moment. I also promised a friend I'd give her one of my little hens and a roo if she wanted a roo for her birthday.

But she already has a roo so I don't know if she is going to want one of mine although she liked the color of a couple of them.

I am always wanting. HOw much are your hatching eggs?

Sorry to reply so late but I am not selling eggs right at this time. I just have 2 hens. I was offering eggs with no responses then when I set some I had a ton of requests, go figure. Anyway, of the 2 hens, Diamond is consistent in good hatches but not consistent laying and I just moved her so it may be a while before she is settled in and lays again. Dovey is very small but had been laying consistently, I just couldn't get any hatched from her eggs. They would develop but only a couple weeks then die. I finally got got one to hatch and this chick just scares me it's so tiny. At 16 days old, Uno only weighs 0.6 ounces. I don't think this one could be anything but a micros size. Dovey is setting some of her own eggs now and in a week or so, I may have more from her but I'd bet it will be a poor hatch and if they are anything as tiny as Uno, it will be a long time before any of them would be big enough to ship, if ever. They do have a limit at the post office on how little an adult can weigh to be shipped.

I do have a 3 month old Pullet and a pullet nearing a month old now so I'm keeping them and will have more later. I can say that these are some very nice Serama's and I bought my original 2 pairs from Jerry in Louisiana so they are good quality.
